This masjid was originally built in 1845, presumably by Indian Muslims who could have relocated from Bencoolen in Sumatra.
In 2001, the mosque's site was redeveloped as part of a mixed development comprising of a commercial block and a 12-storey residential complex. The redeveloped masjid, which is part of the complex, was opened to the public in May 2004. It can accommodate about 1,100 worshippers.
