Spotify Premium - Best Deal for Music

$0.99 per month for unlimited access to almost every song released in the music industry? I’m genuinely surprised that people still even bother with the free version of Spotify. With the free version, your choice is limited and the playlist is random. Not to mention loud, blaring advertisements rudely interrupting your early morning commute to work or school.

On iTunes you pay an average of $1.99 per song to own it. The concept of Spotify Premium is the same, except a lot cheaper. A measly amount of $0.99 a month is definitely worth paying for. Come on, folks, stop being so stingy and go for it!

I never quite understood the rave over Spotify when people around me kept telling me about it, but I still used the app whenever I was bored of the usual repetitive playlist on my phone.

Annoyed with the ads that popped up after every 5 songs, I opted for the trial version of Premium and was hooked after a few days. Spotify actually analyses what you listen to, so that it can look for songs that you have not come across and might like. Without it I would have never chanced upon The 1975, and I lived on their song "Somebody Else" for a few months! Just a tip, the family plan at $14.98 is a bang for your buck because 5 people get to share the payment ($3 per person instead of $9.90) and you don't even have to share accounts.

My one wish for Spotify is to get Taylor Swift on their boat as well, because she's probably the only artist I'm denied the pleasure of listening to (Taytay, do you hear me?).

A whole new world of music

I didn’t buy into Singapore until a few months ago. Why would I want to have to pay for an app or have to deal with adverts when I’ve got YouTube?! Oh wait. YouTube has adverts too. And artists aren’t always super rich and famous. It suddenly all made sense. Spotify is the best if you’re like me and never know what to listen to next. I just play the same thing on repeat until I’m sick of it, but now I can see what my friends are listening to, what music Spotify recommends, music under certain genres, the list is endless.

If you don’t pay, as I don’t, then the adverts are not that bad. The odd advert in Mandarin pops up every now and again, but seeing as I don’t speak Chinese I can’t even get annoyed by what they’re selling. They never last long, and for what you get they are definitely worth it. You can make your own playlists, instantly without having to buy songs separately or whole albums, and you realise quickly why this is the next step in how music is shared.

There will always be new imitations and versions of Spotify, but it’s loyal fan base and its flawless setup leave it safe from any competitor's. Try it yourself and open your mind to a whole new world of music.

Good music on a silver platter

I’m a lazy guy, I want good stuff to be brought to me, and Spotify does just that. I used to listen to local radio stations via their internet apps but that never really cut it, because they don’t always play the songs I like, they just endlessly replay top hits.

Spotify does what YouTube used to do before vevo and ads -- bring good, new music to you. On top of that It remembers the songs you like or skips, and is constantly making new recommendations. It’s a smarter YouTube that acts as your personalized radio. Their curated playlists are also automatically refreshed before you can get bored with them, so you never again have to endure the hassle of sync-ing your iPhone with your iTunes library.

Spotify has spoiled my ears, I cannot imagine going back to radio stations. Even if you don’t pay for Premium, they have less ads than any radio station in Singapore. If you do pay for premium, you can free yourself from the annoying ads, and play anything on demand. If you no longer have a glorious 12GB data package, Premium will conserve those precious bytes with offline mode. Keep your eyes peeled for the occasional $0.99 promotions, it's a steep cut from the usual $9.99. Irresistible.
