The service is not bad too because you jut have to ask the shopkeeper whether they have the title of the movie and they will check it out in their database in no time. My advice is that if you have a movie in mind, just ask the staff; they can point it out in no time! If you are jut looking for a good movie to watch when you're bored, cheap out the older ones. The shop is tiny so it makes finding things easier.
If you wait long enough, older movies (maybe 2-3 years old) will have their cost drop to below $10, which is an excellent bargain! I bought very cheap discs of $7 to watch during my vacation.
The problem came when I was moving house. I suddenly realised that I had such a big collection of VCDs and the worst part was a lot of the VCDs were still in its original packaging meaning I had not even watched the movie once.
Many experts in saving money always advised, "Know your needs from your wants". I guessed I just wanted the VCD but did not really need them because I did not even watch them. I had stopped buying VCD or DVD for myself but I am still buying for my children. Young children can keep on watching the same show many times so it is value for money.
Enough of blabbering, here's what I think about TS. Comparing between the two, I do prefer Poh Kim's lighting as it's more dim and comfortable to the eyes. TS always has a glaring white interior lighting which I personally disliked and found it straining to my eyes (the branch at Tampines Interchange at least).
Not sure if people prefer this service style but I do like TS service staff. They tend to not follow you around, offering you assistance and I prefer that since most of the time, I'm not looking for anything in particular and am just strolling around to see if any movies or drama catches my eye. If I really am indeed looking for a particular title, I would definitely approach them instead so I think there's no need to lurk behind me.
Pricing wise, TS is rather competitive, or should I say similar to competitors. Over the years, the prices of VCD/DVDs have generally fallen to a much affordable and value-for-money state. Instead of going to the movies for a date next time, you can always try shopping for a movie DVD and screen it from the comfort of your home (with a big tub of Ben & Jerry's in front of you) for a different experience.
Unfortunately, due to the proliferation of more and more Korean Dramas online, I no longer visit the store that frequently for my Korean Dramas. Still, I will always stand in front of the TS store and openly watch the drama or movie that is being featured on the TV. I still feel sorry that I could not visit the store that frequently anymore, but it will always be part of my memories.
I was young and silly and I loved Pokemon to death. TS used to be at Sunshine Place and they sold VCDS of Pokemon episodes in Chinese and English. I fancied myself a small-time collector and my grandmother was always setting aside grocery money for my favourite hobby. I would trawl through the VCDs and look for my Pokemon episodes. I remember getting them in Chinese because I liked to watch it with my grandma and she didn't understand English. So believe it or not, I can recite the whole Team Rocket speech in Chinese without missing a beat and under a time limitation. I can also sing the whole Japanese original song intro but we are digressing.
This place was wholly responsible for my childhood entertainment and I cannot thank them enough but for all it's worth and for every sugar in my memories, thank you.
If you are a member of TS, you are entitled to more discounts and they will send you SMS and emails regarding the new dramas and movies that they will be bringing in and are on sale. The staff are rather friendly and helpful as well, always there to introduce you the more popular dramas and movies.
However, I think the price of the DVDs are abit expensive. One series of drama cost about 20 bucks, Compare to rental, it costs 50% more. One of my recommendation is that TS could also offer rental services to the public. Compare to other DVD shops like let's say Hong Kong, there is still room for improvement for TS, at least in my opinion. Overall rating, 3 /5.
However in terms of classic movies, this is where both stores differ from one another. I'm a pretty hardcore fan of Clint Eastwood, so I was ecstatic when I came across the Dirty Harry series. Each costs S$9.90, which is a great bargain! Fans of Al Pacino and James Caan, you might want to check out The Godfather series for S$49+. If you're planning to buy just 1 part, each cost around $13+. Although I was pretty bummed out that the store does not sell Annie Hall, the shopping experience was satisfying enough.
You can shop online as well. If you have a minimum purchase of S$20, the delivery charge will be free of charge. If purchase is less than S$20, be prepared to pay S$3.50 for delivery charge. FYI only in Singapore.
Service was good. I was immediately greeted by the shop assistant. Although he was clearly busy(he was tidying up the CD racks), he was friendly and courteous.
