The thing to understand about Challenger retail staff is that they are tech guys first and salespeople second. They aren't being rude, it's just not second nature to them to be smiley and do the charming salesman thing. The service was silent but swift, and very soon I was headed home with my new Macbook Pro 13" with revved up RAM tucked under my arm. I also bought a Seagate portable hard drive at the member price even though I wasn't a member - I simply got the cashier to key in my friend's membership number, which also means that he benefits from the points reaped by my laptop purchase.
When I’ve no time to scan through all the prices at Sim Lim square, I’ll grab my gadget – usually harddisks from Challenger.
Depending on individual needs, so far, the memberships are not very useful for me even though the discounts are really attractive. I won’t be purchasing the products more than 5 times in a year.
However there was one unpleasant incident. I was eager to buy a sennheiser headphone thus grabbing one of the last two models left. I asked if there were anymore stocks, the staffs replied no. The scotchtaped packing prompted me to do so. But looking that the two sets have the same packaging I bought it.
When I unwrapped the headphones at home, I realized that it looks weird. It doesn’t look brandnew. The cushion on all headsets should have a factory look.
Only after many uses, the cushion will puff up. Thus I headed back to the service counter the next day to negotiate an exchange. They refused to do so, claiming that it was brand new. However, the new sets of headphones in factory wrap were displayed on the shelves. I took one of the new set to argue out my facts.
It was only when I got seriously mad about this dishonest sale, the service officer reluctantly gave me a refund, adding that if the “new” set doesn’t look “new”, there wouldn’t be any refund. True enough, the new set was in its factory brand new look. The cushion is flat and in unused state.
I’m sure the set I bought was a display set that they are trying to get rid. As a customer, product quality is my priority. And this is unforgivable. I rest my case since I got an exchange. I hope they will sell a new product as new product. If they want to get rid of display set, then sell it at a display set price. So customer will be aware what to expect.
I told the sales staff about my choice and he asked if I have any questions regarding my purchase. I thought no since I know what the specs are about. I then proceeded to make the payment. After the payment, he opened the laptop packaging for me to verify and to my surprise it is freakin' pinkish silver in colour.
I wanted to change the laptop because I thought what I see should be what I get and that the labels did not state that their colours are different. This brilliant staff told me that he asked if I had any question before the purchase and that I said no, so it is not his fault. I wanted to ask if what I have bought turned out to be a mouse instead of a laptop, am I to suck it up because I didn't ask if what I'm buying is a laptop? But I did not ask because I didn't want to turn it into a heated debate.
I then asked if calling customer service would help me to get my laptop changed since he may not have the authority to make such decisions. He told me that they outsourced their customer service to Phillipines and that the final decision is still up to their store (which is all sold merchandise are non-refundable). I don't know why he said that but perhaps he's telling me that Challenger's customer service is useless.
Basically we talked a while about the situation and ultimately I am the one to be blamed for not asking him if the highest price model has the same colour as the display model. I am overwhelmed by how such a person can qualify for sales and how Challenger treats their customers. Maybe that's not how Challenger wants their customers to be treated but the fact that a staff can be of this standard tells a lot about this company.
Great doing business with you Challenger! I may consider buying again from you 100 years later.
My parents has been their member since forever. As an IT junkie myself, we tend to spend hundreds a month on technology. Despite us knowing that we could wait and anticipate for the newer model a few weeks later, we still would purchase the item.
Once bought myself a powerbank for my phone, two days later, the wire had a malfunction. I brought my receipt along for warranty. The staff exchanged the item for me one to one without any questions asked! I had a brand new working powerbank and wire that still works after using it daily for the last 2 years.
I had problems finding a toner for my Canon Printer at Courts Singapore, but I'm happy to say I could find it at Challenger with the help of a friendly staff member! I'm also amazed to find out that Challenger offers to take back used toners to be recycled. I think that is a really commendable effort by the company. In addition, as long as someone you know has a membership, you can just quote their NRIC for member's privileges like discounts. Awesome much?!
From time to time, they also have promotions on their desktops, laptops and other appliances. Some of these deals are really a bargain if you ask me.
If you join their membership, you also get to enjoy member discounts. Further more, you get points for purchasing items from their store. You can exchange the accumulated points for selected items in the store or for shopping vouchers.
They have a PC clinic where you can seek help for all your nasty PC issues. The PC clinic also helps you to configure the settings for your new PC or Laptop if you require.
The best Challenger I have went to so far is the branch in Funan IT Mall. They have a wide variety of IT products as well as household appliances. They have adequate technical staff to answer to your needs and queries in each of the different departments of the store.
The good - There are many stores island wide which are easily accessible should you suddenly find you need a IT product (thumbdrive, CD ROMS) urgently. Just pop by any shopping centre and chances are you would be able to find a Challenger located there.
Also, since Challenger carries a variety of products, it is easy to 'scout' and make comparisons between different brands.
Personally, what i would do is i would decide on my favourite brand at challenger, then head down to Simlim Square to look for the best prices. Of course, finding an honest dealer at Simlim square would be a different story.
The prices are not really that cheap but it will be a little cheaper if you are a member of Challenger. I do find that their thumb drives are rather cheap, some less than $10. It is also organized so that you can find the things you want easily.
We have a Challenger outlet practically 1 kilometre from our houses. It serves as a good place for me to buy a new earpiece if im on the way out, because it would not be nice to take a long ride without any music. This affects most of us, making us fall into the trap, and simply neglecting to take a longer ride to Funan for a more decently priced item.
The service was good (I'm not that fussy at all), although all I needed was some directions. They were very friendly, and I really love that. I also bought a USB port, which is left unused till today. This describes the temptation to purchase stuff from Challenger just because of its prices for most items.
