I celebrated valentines day at canele because they had a V'day special. I had salmon whiles my boyfriend had ham & cameralised onions pancake for dinner. The pan fried salmon was cooked to perfection with the skin being slightly charred yet the insides with still a shade of rosy peach. The 2 pan fried scallops sitting beside the salmon offset the dish as they were tasteless.

The camralised onions with smoked ham inside a huge pancake was delicious though a little hard to eat. The dressing matched excellently with the salty sweet dish. The set included an artisan tea which was very light tasting and a delicious opera cake. For the price it was definitely worth it.

Although I'm a huge desert fan, I never like the taste of macarons. I think they're just overly sweet, tasteless and overprice piece of soft biscuit. But one day I followed my friend to Canele and she ordered some macarons. There, I decided to do my experiment.

My experience with their salted caramel was out of this world. Finally, I know what all these craze about macarons are. They tasted heavenly. From now on, I will always buy my macarons from Canele.

I love the ambiance here. I always love places with huge, comfortable lounge chairs. They make perfect place to catch up with friends while having a quick bite on sumptuous desert.

Price is a little bit high end here. Be prepared to pay a little bit for the quality that you'll get.

It was a hot weekday afternoon when my friend and I visited Gardens by The Bay, We decided to seek some shelter at the Canele outlet nearby, We were both tired and drained from the scorching weather but the dessert perked us up a lot!

Skip the colorful macaroons. We dived straight to the strawberry shortcake. It was amazing.. It was not too sweet and the strawberries buried in between the layers were huge too! They tasted real fresh and we just could not stop eating it! It did not taste too creamy as well.

What a wonderful creation by Canele. Definitely be back for more strawberry shortcake goodness! (:

I can never walk past the joint at Raffles City without getting drawn by the various cakes and macaroons on display. I sometimes see a massive croissant or two and coloured meringues the size of my palm. The cakes are generally very good. We had what I believed was a classic, New York cheesecake, and it was everything a cheesecake should be -- dense, rich, creamy. I haven't yet tried any of their macaroons but I hope to one day. The only complaint I have is that it's a little too expensive and the portions are quite small too.

The first impression I had of Canelé was of 'wondrous'. With a posh interior, it was as though I had stepped food into a cosy little cafe in Paris or Italy. The staff there were extremely helpful and patient, explaining which were more popular amongst the crowds. I, myself, isn't a fanatic for macarons as they're too sweet for me (I'm more of a bittersweet person), but I've heard of great reviews from a couple friends who loves macarons more than anything in this world. Apparently, they are 'as heavenly as heaven, and earthier than TWG'.

The cakes that they offer are wondrously delectable; the chocolate melts right in your mouth, and the last thing on your mind would be the calorie overload. There's always the guilt ridden wondering if it was really worth blasting thousands of calories on a slice of cake (or two. You can never stop in Canelé). Well, I just have to say something: Go for it. You wouldn't regret it, after-all, Canelé isn't called as one of the best dessert places in Singapore for nothing.

The prices aren't exactly cheap, but they're not exorbitant either. Prepare to bring at least $50 if it's on a date with your (girl)friend; you wouldn't want to be embarrassed with an empty wallet. Don't worry, I promise it's all a bang for your buck.

Nothing beats having a rest at a nice cafe with a hot smoothing cuppa in your hands (or in local context, a chilled latte when the weather gets overwhelming) in between your shopping spree, and honestly, that's my favorite part of shopping for I don't see myself as a shopaholic!

Just this day, while shopping with my gf along Orchard, we decided to take a break at Canele, the one near to Shaws. It's her first time trying out Macarons while I decided to only have a coffee, having still being full from lunch.

Although my gf has taken a long time, literally really a long time, choosing her Macarons flavor, the staff is helpful and patient in providing feedback and comments on the different options. Sad to say, my gf doesn't find the Macarons (or perhaps all Macarons) to her liking for she finds them horribly sweet and she doesn't have a sweet tooth like me. On the other hand, after taking a small bite of her Macarons, even I find them too sweet for my liking. I may not have a lot of experience with Macarons (having the only other time tried at Antoinette) but this is really incredibly sweet.

I probably will not return to Canele, despite liking their classy European layout and good service, at least for the Macarons. A cuppa might still be possible though.

For now, ill just be commenting on their takeaway counter.

That is namely, their sweets. Got a whole row of their macaroons one day and the bright colours definitely excited me. One look at the oozing fillings sandwiched between two crisp meringue shells, the thought already makes me salivate. Turquoise, chilli red, amber and a pretty green, the colours reminiscent of a rainbow, what's there not to like?

BUT WAIT. Don't jump the gun here now. That's the appearance, not the taste. My verdict's not out yet. Well, too sweet, definitely too sweet. I know macaroons are meant to be sweet, they are. But theirs? Diabetes inducing. Heck, on a health freak's point of view, the amount of colouring added is enough to induce a string of health related problems.

After a few bites, i couldn't take it anymore. Even though i have a sweet tooth, they were definitely to much for me. I got a migraine from the excessive amount of sugar added.

Atas high tea

I tried the high tea set with my friend which was $20++ for a slice of cake, 2 macaroons, sandwich fingers as well as a pot of tea.

I must say that their macaroons are really delicious, unlike some from other shops which taste really artificial. They also came in really interesting flavours such as rice kris pie chocolate, violet berries, lemon lime, and vanilla banana - specials from their summer collection. My friend and I felt really tai tai eating here as their seats were really plush and the place was very elegantly furnished. However, we felt that the sandwiches were nothing special since they only came in ham and cheese or egg mayonnaise. Their cakes, which were their specialty, were also very tastefully decorated and tasted fabulous. The tea were not those from the teabags as well, hence they were exceptionally aromatic and suitable for refills (which are allowed).

It's hard to believe that Canele is actually a home-grown patisserie, and not a French export. The ambience is just so pretty with posh-looking seats and matching tables. I go there only for their desserts and the ones that stand out are Le Royale, Triple Chocolate Cheesecake and of course the macaroons! Their most popular flavour is the sea-salt caramel flavour, which runs out very fast. The drinks were quite affordable, with prices matching Starbucks or less.

Be warned though that the hot chocolate is not the conventional hot chocolate. My friend who has a sweet tooth made a mistake by ordering that drink. I believe it takes a person who really appreciates chocolate to appreciate the drink because it was not sweet but not bitter at the same time. It just tastes chocolatey and for me, that's good enough!

Canele - can lah
(Updated: October 21, 2012)
Overall Score

When they first appeared on the cafe scene, Canele more or less set the trend for backlit patisserie displays with their eye-catching rows of colourful macaroons atop light boxes.

Typically Singaporean in its approach to aesthetics, Canele is branded and designed to the hilt, from the swanky graphics on all their takeaway packaging to the colour-coordinated interiors.

The coffee and cake are all up to scratch, on par with similarly-priced competitors. Especially noteworthy is the Earl Grey and Fig ice cream flavor, which is unique to Canele.

I don’t like that there is service charge. Table service is not necessary for me. I’d rather carry my own tea to my table. That’s what God gave me hands and legs for.
