Classic Cakes at Frankel Estate
Frankel Estate , 52 Siglap Drive 456175
As he states on his website, Mr Charles Quek, owner of Classic Cakes, bakes "unpretentiously great cakes". This bakery-cafe offers a selection of cakes, brownies and desserts. Despite its name, Classic Cakes can be said to be known for its Mille Crêpes dessert as well as its cakes. Mille Crêpes is an unusual dessert consisting of many thin layers of crêpes sandwiched between freshly-made vanilla pastry cream. Cakes on the menu include Black Velvet, Black Forest, Best Ever Chocolate and Lemon Caramel. Other offerings include sea salt brownies and savoury traditional Chinese steamed cakes. According to their website, their Radish Cake (Lor Bak Gou) and Yam Cake (Wu Tau Gou) come from family recipes.
But take one bite of their famous Mille Crêpes and all (including the heavy price tag of about $6 for a rather small slice) could be forgiven. This unusual dessert consists of layers of thin, delectable crêpes (pancake-like) stacked upon one another, with fresh vanilla cream in between. The caramelised sugar crust gives it an interesting crunch.
Other cakes on offer look scrumptious as well, but I couldn't bring myself to try them due to their high prices (a slice usually costs more than $6). Perhaps I'll try them the next time.
Atmosphere is lack-lustre; more of a bakery than a cafe, with unimpressive presentation (plastic plates) of cakes when dining in. There were only two small tables that could barely sit three people each. Could be explained by the bakery aiming to be "unpretentious".
The lack-lustre atmosphere and service do not do justice to the wonderful dessert, with the high prices being even more discouraging. Hence, I'm only likely to drop by if I happen to be in the neighbourhood.
