Cedele by The Bakery Depot was founded by Ms Yeap Cheng Guat in July 1997. After spending many years in the multi-nationals, Ms Yeap decided to put her baking passion to test. Since day one, Cedele by The Bakery Depot was formed with a clear objective in mind – making healthy and quality food.
Singapore has several bread shops and by bread I mean bread. I don’t mean Gardenia soft serve or highly refined white starch with sugar: I mean chunky, whole grain, nutty, healthy home baked loaves that granny used to bake on the farm before it became a Portuguese kampung.
In fact, that raises the following truth: what is great about Vietnam? French bread. What is great about Timor L’Este? Portuguese paun. What is lousy about Singamalasianesia? Sweet, Dutch breads where the crumbs are held together by sugar and pasted over with chocolate paste. Heaven help us!
Singapore has so many bakeries and bakery chains. They fall into two categories: real bread and fancy bread.
If you want the real thing, Cedele is as good as it gets. And that is just the bread. It coffee and meals are also great.
Not only is their carrot cake moist and flavored with the right amount of spices, the cream cheese frosting is not sickeningly sweet! Just the way I love my cakes. Cedele also have a bakery selling freshly baked bread which I love, but it is a little pricey compared to normal bakeries.
Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a healthy yet satisfying meal.
I have so many favourites from their menu, but if I had to choose, the Chicken Pesto Gourmet Thins would be the one. Pieces of tender and juicy pan fried chicken smothered in melted cheese and pesto sauce in a wrap. Easily the best wrap I’ve eaten in Singapore.
Cedele’s baked goods are also a hit, especially their 2-Berry muffins. The tartness of the berries and the spongy insides of the muffins played out well with the crumbly streusel topping. Cedele is a winner with both its baked goods and dishes.
The soups at Cedele are very thick and flavourful and my favourite is their pumpkin soup. Upon ordering soup, customers are entitled to free flow of bread at the bread counter and some flavours include olives, wholemeal etc. I really like the pastas at Cedele as well, especially the grilled chicken pasta as their sauce is freshly made.
However, the food items are slightly overpriced. One plate of pasta costs on average $16 while a bowl of soup can cost up to $7. I feel like Cedele is increasingly commercialised and customers who want a taste of true healthy, organic food may switch to other restaurants.
Their main courses are decent, but they hurt my wallet, so I don’t eat them often. I enjoy their Rosemary Chicken sandwich. The first time I ate it I was surprised to find jam with the chicken breast, but they go really well together.
I like the food portion and the different bread selections! The best part of Cedele is the bread counter and I always like to dip mine in olive oil and vinaigrette.
I would recommend trying the beetroot burger with pumpkin bread buns if you are looking for a healthier option. If you have a sweet tooth, their dessert and cakes are really good as well!
I am definitely getting my loyalty card the next time I visit Cedele!
The first thing I noticed was the huge array of breads, cakes and organic cooking supplies like grapeseed oil and raw coconut oil. This was, doubtlessly, a place that emphasises health as wealth.
After a little episode of indecision resulting from the many choices available, I settled on the Chocolate Banana Espresso Cake and a cup of Egyptian Mint Leaf. Being a bit of a chocaholic, I requested a corner slice and the server very kindly acquiesced to it.
Service was fast, well-informed, efficient and polite. You could not really ask for more.
Back at the table, the Chocolate Banana Espresso Cake looked impressive. As soon as my fork touched the top of the slice, I could feel the firm resistance of properly-made chocolate frosting. Cutting through it, I found the rest of the cake to be sufficiently firm and yet yielding easily to pressure. The banana was caramelised and present in good-sized chunks, perfect for a mouthful.
With a piece balanced precariously on my fork, I had a taste test.
The first flavour was that of the banana. It was potent and filled the entirety of my mouth instantaneously. Not too sweet, it slowly ebbed into the slightly more laid-back, but nevertheless still robust, flavour of chocolate. This was no light, fluffy sponge cake. However, the density of the cake seemed just right for the strength of the flavours. Any lighter and it would detract, rather than enhance, the experience. The oat streusel topping added a crunchy contrast to the softer inside. Normally not a fan of hard textures in soft foods, I was still pleasantly surprised at how well it all came together. The espresso flavour was very light and subtle, more of a background support than a front-line welcome.
This is a cake I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the combination of chocolate and banana. Neither overpowered the other and were present in a balanced, restrained fashion.
After the dancing plethora of flavours on my palate, I had a sip of the Egyptian Mint Leaf. The "cool" sensation was a welcome refreshment of the senses and complemented the cake very well.
I will certainly be back to Cedele. It is no longer just a mental note to me. Definitely a recommendation.
I had their carrot cake and red velvet, and the flavour they had was one of the most natural I've ever had. Cedele doesn't use artificial flavourings in their food, and that's probably a big contributing factor. But it doesn't affect the taste; in fact, it's one the better cakes I've had. The texture of the cakes are delightful as well.
Those who love natural flavours should definitely go to Cedele.
I do prefer the other breads that they have though. Their breads just taste so natural and I can feel the heart of the baker(not kidding) by eating them. I've never really been to any of the outlets myself and I would want to try having a meal there someday!
The interior of the eatery is modern, whilst trying to emulate a more cozy feel to it, by the use of the smooth wooden panelling and tables. The seating is somewhat packed, however when I sat down to enjoy my meal, I didn't feel cramped despite the close proximity between myself and the other patrons in the table next to mine. There is a mish-mash of different types of seating arrangements, which I thought really maximised the space constraints. There were smaller tables for lone diners or couples, as well as a longer tables (resembling canteen tables) for either groups or random singles to have a seat to eat at and perhaps strike up a conversations with the stranger next to him. This was a welcome change from eateries where a lone patrons had to take up an entire table space for four, just because there were no tables specially catered for those who wish to dine alone.
That aside, although I had visited the outlet during lunch hour in the CBD area, there was no line when I went in, however I think it was simply a stroke of luck on my part as the lines fluctuated constantly during my time there. There were about 20 choices of sandwiches in total, where many boasted of using 100% natural ingredients and sauces. From the menu variety, one can see that Cedele does hold itself to higher standard than the run of the mill Subway outlets, with an array of rather exotic sandwiches such as the Rosemary Chicken as well as the Grilled Chicken with Avocado and brie. I'm afraid I am not much of a daring foodie, so I went with what I considered to be the more traditional Ham and Cheese sandwich, with a side of wild mushroom soup.
I waited for about 5 minutes for my food and found a seat easily enough. The sandwich bread was light and fluffy as it should be, and the tomatoes, cheese and ham were fresh and the helpings generous. The highlight for me though, would have been the wild mushroom soup and I can dare say that The Soup Spoon can go eat its heart out, when compared to Cedele's soups. The soup was well seasoned and not overly creamy to the point where one would wonder if they were drinking a pint of milk or soup. I was also pleasantly surprised to see slices of actual mushroom was also included in the soup, which added extra texture to the dish itself.
My entire meal was $11.50, while without the soup it would have been $8.50. Definitely on the pricier side of things, however definitely a bang for your buck in my opinion. Sandwich helpings are generous and meticulously prepared, and the bread was toasted to just the right fluffiness. Although you'd have to fork out a little bit more, I would recommend getting a small bowl of soup with your meal, which is especially comforting when drunk on a cold and rainy December afternoon.
The cakes and ice cream are also a delight! The chocolate belgium is rich and creamy, with a slight peanuty taste, while the sea salt caramel is smooth and mild, not too sweet.
I always enjoy dining af cedele because both the food and service is great and value for money!
