我愛台妹 was born for the love of food, particularly Taiwanese food. The concept of Taimei are brought together by two Taiwanese sisters who are passionate foodies along with an up-and-coming Shatec graduate chef whose mission for uncompromised fine food sealed the perfect partnership. With this shared love for food, this dedicated team began their journey searching far and wide for the best Taiwanese food possible.
Their seaweed shaker fries also gave me a pleasant surprise because it reminds me so much of Macdonald's (I am a huge fan and I never thought anyone could do shaker fries as well as Macs) and I suppose I don't need to wait for their seasonal release of shaker fries anymore, and I can't wait to try out the other fries' flavours from I Love Taimei.
To sum up, it was my first try, and it was a pretty great one. Taiwan street food for the win!
Meekly, I joined the queue behind people who I thought spent way too much of their time eating I Love Taimei, because how else were they so confident in their orders?! It is an extensive menu, and I quickly learned that there were 6 different types of 'Taimei's' one could choose from, each type a different form of fried snack (there are 8 now, as I just found out from their website - http://www.ilovetaimei.com.sg/menu_maindish.php). You then decide if you want to pair it with a side dish and a drink.
I picked the popcorn chicken combo (because mama's trying to watch her waistline here) coupled with a side of tofu fries and a random drink. There are 7 different flavors of seasoning available and my personal favorite is the Garlic Seafood. Also if you have a spicy option for any of the food you order, definitely go for that.
Friends who tried other seasoning flavors all tell me that their pick is 'the bombs'. No, I'm telling you right now, nothing is better than tofu fries fully covered in that salty, fragrant garlic seafood goodness. Spicy Mexico comes in second, but nope, hardly close enough.
Everything I've tried has been perfectly deep-fried and dusted in generous amounts of chili powder when requested.
Their variations of fried chicken have one thing in common, wonderfully fried to a crisp golden crunch, yet retaining its succulence. A word of advice though, do eat while it's fresh from the fryer as it tends to lose its crispy texture once it's cool and moist with condensation.
Their tofu fries are amaaaazing as well, and you get to choose a coating of sinfully sodium laded flavouring, such as seaweed, and wasabi (no need to wait for McDonald's shaker fries!)
For the more "health conscious", they do have french beans and deep fried mushrooms, which are also as divine and artery clogging but totally worth it!
Their drinks are all wonderful, but a personal favourite of mine would their passion pops (you know, something sour to wash down the oiliness)
Do give this little humble joint a try, it might be the next thing that motivates you to bugis just for them!
However I felt that their service is a little bit too slow, but at least there are shops around I can look at.
I also like their concept and whenever I visit the stall I would start singing the song 我愛台妹. I would like to try their other side dishes and their bubble tea too!
I recall the first time my friend and I passed by the I Love Taimei stall at Bugis Street. We were looking for some food to fill our stomachs when we came across this store. I had been to Taiwan the year before for a holiday trip and I have come to love the food there. Hence upon seeing this store, I decided to give it a try.
We took a look at the menu and decided to order a combo to share since we were not exactly sure if it would turn out nice. We ordered the BBQ crispy chicken, bubble tea but we were stuck on the choices for side dishes. I noticed there was Tofu fries available on the menu. Curious to find out how it would taste like, we ordered the seaweed flavoured tofu fries. Though I would say that it’s a little expensive for my pocket but it was definitely worth my money. One crunch of the tofu and we immediately became fans of the franchise.
The flavour and crunch of the seaweed fries was perfect, the meat was juicy and the milk tea was awesome. Ever since then, whenever I went to Bugis Street, I would remember to go over to the I Love Taimei store to purchase a combo to share with my friends. So far, I have tried seaweed flavour and cheese flavour, I would still go with seaweed flavour.
Every time I eat it, I would recall the fun memories I had share with my friends when we went to Taiwan where we went on a food buffet, tasting all the delicious Taiwanese delights as well as experiencing the Taiwan culture. I am glad that Singapore is an international hub for food as if its not, we would not be able to get to tastes such fantastic cuisines.
Being a fan of chicken, I love Taimei serves several crispy chickens, and all I could say is...it is WONDERFUL. The extra crispy chicken had a really crunchy skin, which is my favourite part of the chicken. I noticed that the chicken is really oily, however. There are several other dishes, but I would definitely recommend their Crispy Lemon Chicken. It is one of the best dishes they have.
There are currently 3 outlets in Singapore - at Raffles City Shopping Centre, Bugis Village as well as Bugis Junction.
It is really a unique idea for I love Taimei to offer a set meal like this, especially since Singaporeans are a fan of fried chicken and bubble tea! One must definitely try this shop if you are a lover of other famous fried chickens in Singapore, for example, Shilin, as it definitely offers something different! The chicken is marinated with super tasty sauces and it's really crunchy!
When thinking of what to order, I will recommend one to order the BBQ chicken, the seaweed tofu fries (which doesn't taste like tofu at all!) and their classic milk tea. I love Taimei is not a shop to be missed! (:
I often frequent the one at Bugis Junction, and whenever I go there, I never fail to order a cup of their lemon jelly bubble tea. Though it's not milk tea, it definitely hits my sweet spot - slightly sour yet sweet at the same time, and the gelatinous homemade ice jelly goes amazingly well with it.
I've never tried their milk tea before, but I suppose it must be good because I always see people walking away with cups of milk tea in hand, sucking furiously at their straws in a bid to get the pearls out.
The tofu fries are a nice change from the potato ones - they taste lighter and since they're made of tofu, probably go easy on the calories as well. Other dishes on the menu include sweet potato fries, fried mushrooms, and even fried long beans. Not to forget the XL Crispy Chicken!
When I went to Bugis Street outlet, I was very tickled to see that the set menus, instead of the usual A B C 1 2 3, had been christened “Selina”, “Ella” and “Hebe”. Somewhere out there is a trio of Taiwanese KTV lounge hostesses named Selina, Ella and Hebe sucking on big, long….. bubble milk tea straws.
But anyway, one of my friend chose Taimei since she had some connection with the boss and that she worked part time there before. So basically, she dragged all of the class to taste their food first, get an understanding of their product and so on.
And wow!! It has some of the nicest bubble milk tea i have ever drink, the food is awesome especially the fried chicken cutlet. But of course, it's kind of pricey though, but definitely worth a try if you want to taste Taiwanese food. The customer service was also friendly and especially when you got to talk to cute babes and for girls, handsome hunks, it's quite an enjoyable experience all in all.
