Sushi Express offers a straightforward and fuss free dining concept — all sushi is served on a conveyor belt, you grab all that you fancy and pay for the number of plates at the end of the meal. Each plate is priced competitively at $1.50++, making it the ideal choice to have affordable and reasonably quality food in the heart of town. This is why Sushi Express tends to get extremely crowded at lunch and dinner times.

The server would ask if you would like miso soup, and please say no to that because it is not in the least bit appetizing! Since only sushi is served, I only stick to my salmon sushi though the variety they offer is rather reasonable. They do offer this cooked salmon sushi (sorry I can’t remember what it’s called) that is a MUST TRY!

For the past 2 weeks I've eaten at sushi express thrice! Everything is $1.50 a plate. Even the sashimi is $1.50! Everything i go i take 2-3 plates of sashimi because it's super cheap and the quality is great! I love the miso soup as it's not the normal miso soup. It has salmon inside it which enhance the taste of the soup. The huge scallop is so worth it. They have a huge variety of sushis but only con is that they don't have chanwamushi. :(

Although service is minimum, they still charge GST and service charge. Plus point is that they offer free flow green tea and free wet towel (usually cost 20 cents). Yes, i sound like a cheapskate but given the number of times i ate there, i already saved 60cents on wet towels.

Sushi for $1.50 per plate seemed too good to be true. Initially I was doubtful when my friends suggested having Sushi Express for dinner. We went to the 313@Somerset outlet and at 6pm, there was already a short queue outside. Thankfully, we only waited for 15 minutes before we were seated.

My friends went crazy and ordered about 5 plates of salmon sushi. I did not want to try the salmon sushi in the beginning as I only take fresh raw salmon slices. And a $1.50 for a plate of salmon sushi didn't sound convincing. After much persuasion from my friends who began digging into the salmon pieces, I decided to try. And I was truly taken aback! The raw salmon is indeed fresh and delightful! There wasn't the slightest fishy smell and it simply melted in my mouth. I fell in love.

The other sushis were as good and fresh too. For $1.50 and for quality like that, I think I found my favorite sushi chain. When we finished our meal, the queue outside was snaking. And I could definitely understand why so.

Managed to spot a short queue during early dinner time and decided to try this.

Dishes priced nett at $1.50 is definitely reasonable when you are in the town area and searching for dinner venues.
They have pretty limited variety and you will see the same few dishes circulating after a while., But I wasn't that hungry that day and I like to eat abit of everything.

The size of fish atop the rice was reasonable, and there was also 3pcs of sashimi (albeit small) for $1.50.
There's no GST and service charge if I'm not wrong, and no surcharge for the wet towels too.

Recommend you to try if you are around the area and there's no long queue for it(:

For $1.50 a plate, sushi express sure catches the attention of passer-bys. No wonder sushi express is always packed with people.

However, for its economical price, this restaurant's bane is that it only allow its customers to dine to a maximum of 41 minutes. Also, if you are looking for top notch quality sushi, this is definitely not for you. The taste of the sushi is decent, but not fantastic. In addition, the variety is limited and the frequency of certain type of sushi's are inconsistent. I had to wait like 10/15 minutes for the unagi sushi to appear on the belt.

In all, if you have a sushi craving and have little time to spare, sushi express is the place to go. Otherwise, don't bother.

$1.50 for a plate of sushi? No way.

Surprisingly, when I visited, it wasn't very crowded, probably because it was slightly before lunchtime. At only $1.50 a plate, it entices customers - especially students like me - to eat affordable sushi.

The sushi is placed on a conveyor belt and you are just supposed to take the sushi that you want, then pay by the number of plates afterwards. The sushi was decent - not excellent - and the variety wasn't great. Sometimes, a particular type of sushi takes very long to make its way onto the conveyor belt.

One thing to note at Sushi Express - priced at just $1.50 a plate, we tend to go "Aiyah, a few plates only, won't be that much lah..." Before you know it, you would've eaten about 30++ plates of sushi (Approx. $45!!!!). With $45, you can easily buy better quality sushi from somewhere else.

$1.50 for a plate of sushi is indeed cheaper than most places but it is not the cheapest I've encountered. Hence, I was not too attracted by Sushi Express. However, a group of my friends decided on the Tampines 1 outlet for lunch one day and I agreed to just tag along.

We arrived at the outlet and were promptly led to a booth seat. The seats were shorter than expected and were slightly uncomfortable to say the least. They also seemed to be extremely busy that day as the floor was dotted with litter and was quite unsightly. It is a restaurant after all, and the customers' appetites can be affected by the cleanliness of the surroundings. I have to admit I was a little disappointed and put off by this.

With regards to the food, it was not bad. The sushi and other dishes were fresh enough and their puddings were good too. However, a lot of the same kind of sushi kept appearing consecutively and it got a bit frustrating. The place also had an open concept, whereby we could see some of the kitchen crew slicing fish, making sushi, etc. I guess this gives customers a sense of assurance as they can literally keep an eye on how their food is being made.

I think that the place gave off a mass-production feel. I got the feeling that the sushi here was being produced robotically to keep up with the demand. It is little wonder that the place is called Express Sushi. But then again, this is only my personal opinion.

I would say that sushi express has great value - but don't expect amazing sushi at $1.50 per plate.

I visited on a Saturday night and waited in queue for 15 minutes. It's a pretty reasonable timing for cheap sushi that doesn't taste too bad.

I was particularly disturbed that their salmon sashimi had blood stains on it - that was an absolute turn off for me. But the next batch of salmon sashimi that came along was beautiful - so I guess that saved the night for me.

I would recommend ordering the miso soup. It comes with salmon chunks and tofu cubes, and is both flavourful and worth the $1.50 you fork out.

I also like the swordfish sushi - absolute value at just $1.50 for two slices.

I will revisit again and I hope there won't be blood in my sashimi this time.

Sushi for the budget conscious, on the go

If you are looking for a place with free flow hot green tea and cheap sashimi on the fly, look no further. Sushi Express is the McDonalds of Japanese cuisine - when there’s no queue. With the average lunchtime crowd at Westgate, you may sometimes have to wait a few minutes for a seat. Whenever the open a new outlet and have a $1 per plate promotion, the queue can get crazy, the entire length of Jurong Point 2 crazy.

My favourite dish is the Aburi Salmon. They don’t always have it, and it's usually gone almost as soon as it hits the belt. So I’ve tried many ways to get more aburi. The best is to ask the staff nicely, and they may get the kitchen staff to start making some. Otherwise just wait for the telltale smell of aburi in the works, and pounce when they appear. By pounce I mean shamelessly stand outside the kitchen window to receive the fresh plates before it even touches the belt. Aburi is best eaten hot.

Aside from the sashimi and the aburi salmon, my other favourites are Hana Maki and the chocolate cake. Nothing that will blow you away, though satisfying nonetheless. Also, during peak hours they may choose to enforce their 40min time limit. Either way the seating arrangements don’t encourage staying. They mostly have bar seats that don’t make for good conversation and their tables pretty cramped.

Sushi express is a place that offers affordable sushi on a conveyor belt. I visited there for lunch on a weekend afternoon and it was really crowded, probably due to its affordability because that's the only positive point about this whole place. The food on the conveyor belt was found to be scarce and could not really get what I want. When I tried to get the service crew's attention, it was so hard and I was ignored once or twice. What's the point of going to the restaurant if you don't even get food!!! Since the food on the conveyor belt was limited and there was loads of people, demand obviously surpassed supply and it just makes the whole concept look stupid.

The sushi was okay. Average quality. It's about the same as what you would get at Umi Sushi or those sushi booths at Cold Storage. The prawns were small and not sweet. Overall quality of the food is low and thus the low price. You really pay for what you get. Unless you are looking for a cheap fix for your sushi craving, don't ever come here. The service is bad, the place is noisy and the lack of food makes it pointless. I strongly suggest spending a little more to go to Sakae sushi if you are on a tight budget. Even sakae sushi is better than this place. Never ever stepping into this orange place again even if they give out free sushi.
