Nestled in a corner of the Burlington Square shopping centre down Bencoolen Street, Hot Spot Café Restaurant has built a reputation as the go-to destination for zi char in Bugis, thanks to the fragrant aromas and great taste of its many dishes. Specialising in local Chinese as well as Thai-inspired cuisine, the dining spot has become especially famous for its fish soup stall, which draws long queues from many fans of the fresh and succulent taste of its sliced fish soup dish.

Hidden sliced fish soup gem in Bendeemer

At the corner of Burlington Square on a regular weekday afternoon, you might catch sight of the tail-end of a snaking queue. This is possibly because hidden right there is a restaurant renowned for its sliced fish soup. At under $5 a bowl, you can choose your preferred noodle variety, soup base, and fish (fried or sliced). My personal favourite is the milk-based soup with sliced fish.

Be sure to ask them to add the extra fried egg on top - the signature ingredient that distinguishes them from other sliced fish soup establishments. Cheap and tasty, this place is worth the line-up.

Tip: Go early because the sliced fish stall closes by mid-afternoon, while the restaurant itself still continues serving other delicacies.
