PROTON is a Malay acronym for 'Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Berhad' which has the meaning of National Automobile Enterprise in English. Founded in 1983 under the direction of the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, PROTON was the first and only national automobile manufacturer in Malaysia until the establishment of the secondary national automobile manufacturer, Perodua, in 1993.
