The Singapore government has completed their review of the mandatory death penalty for all its laws and in some of the drug trafficking areas have abolished it. In recent times a high-profile case was that of Malaysian drug trafficker Yong Vui Kong who was sentenced to death in 2008 for trafficking heroin and was only 19 at the time.
Amnesty International has referenced Yong’s case in its recent pleas on the Singapore government to abolish capital punishment. There are 35 persons awaiting capital punishment at the moment, with the majority (28) being sentenced for drug offences and the rest for murder.
