5 Things to Do in Tioman, Malaysia

Activities for your Tioman holiday

Located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang, Tioman Island is a densely forested, duty-free island surrounded by numerous coral reefs. With eight villages scattered throughout Tioman Island, plus the many resorts and chalets, Tioman Island is considered one of Malaysia’s most beautiful holiday destinations.

Here are the top five things you absolutely have to do in Tioman. Be warned, though – they’re not for the physically unfit or faint of heart!

1. Swim with the Fish

A big part of Tioman’s appeal is the abundant marine life along the coast that runs from Pahang to the South China Sea. Tourists usually explore the marine life by snorkelling, scuba diving, or glass-bottom boat tours.

Can’t swim? Try paddleboarding or sea walking, where you wear a heavy-duty water-tight glass helmet.

2. Trek through the Rainforest

Tioman’s dense rainforests are perfect for a trek to see Pahang’s local flora and fauna. Covered in rolling hills of varying steepness, Tioman is home to species such as the red giant flying squirrel, walking catfish and mouse deer. This trek is best done during the day.

3. Climb the Twin Peaks

Novice rock climbers can try their hand at rock climbing at several sites around Tioman. The truly daring, however, may want to take on the challenge of scaling the twin peaks, which Pahang sailors know as the Dragon Horns. The twin peaks challenge is a five-day event. Rock climbers face unpredictable weather conditions, while living and sleeping at dizzying heights along the way. Only a few have reached the summit since 2002.

4. Catching the Sunset

Everyone does this on an island holiday, but simply catching the sunset on the horizon towards Pahang is one of the best things you can do in Tioman. There are several points around the island where you can soak up this beautiful sight. Try the beach, one of the numerous bars, or even a jetty.

5. Go Fishing

Anglers and fishermen love the islands off Pahang, including Tioman, for their variety of fish. Fishing in Tioman will net you fish such as mackerel, dorado, barracuda, golden trevally, wahoo, queenfish, snapper, grouper and more – some of which are perfect for your dinner table!

Part of the thrill of fishing in Tioman is the chance to hook a coveted species such as sailfish or marlin, which makes an excellent photo and a truly unbeatable memory to share with your friends.

Malaysia’s best-kept secret

In our cosmopolitan age of skyscrapers and commercialisation, it’s almost hard to believe places like Tioman still exist. It’s a true island paradise where you can be one with Mother Nature in all her unspoilt glory. Whether you want to immerse yourself in marine life, climb a mountain, or just sit back and contemplate the wonders of the world, there’s bound to be something for you here.
