About The Manhattan FISH MARKET
Mention The Manhattan FISH MARKET and people immediately think of their signature flaming platters and fish and chips. More dishes may come to mind soon, as The Manhattan FISH MARKET will be launching 43 new dishes across all its outlets on 12 November 2014.
It is always interesting when menus are refreshed, because it shows that consumers are being listened to or that steps are being taken to ensure that consumers don’t get bored. With this in mind, I was excited to get a taste of this new menu.
Drinks and Starters
Their new drink, the Happiness Infusion ($6), did make me happy. It had an earl grey tea base and hints of strawberry accompanying it. The drink was very refreshing, and the two flavours went well together. I liked that the tea taste did not overwhelm the sweetness of the strawberry.
Next up, we had the Oyster Roulette ($7.95). The Manhattan Fish Market focuses on your experience, giving equal weighting to presentation and taste.
With 4 poached oysters in shot glasses, this starter makes use of a Russian roulette concept to spice up the fun. 3 of the oysters are seasoned normally, while one is much spicier. It was sour with a slight taste of chilli, but didn’t have the spiciness I was anticipating from the description. Many Singaporeans are sure to find this manageable, so something spicer would be more challenging!
Next was the Onion Glory ($7.95) – battered onion strips that come with a delicious dip. The onion strips were overflowing, and are the result of cutting up and frying a whole onion! It was delicious, and we could really taste the onion when we were expecting fried batter with bits of onion. The dip was creamy and a bit sour, and complemented the onion well. This is one of my favourite new additions to the menu.
Main Courses
It was time for the main event. Our mouths dropped open when we found out what the Fishy Chicky Bang Bang ($13.95) was – dory on one side and chicken on the other, melded together by cheddar cheese before being fried. An innovative idea and very sinful! The batter is crispy and the cheese oozes out after you cut into it.
It comes with a sunny side-up displayed on fried spaghetti – I suggest you skip this though as it was too hard and not very appetizing.
Next was the Curry Hill Seafood ($16.95 with Slipper Lobster, $14.95 with Tiger Prawns) – the curry sauce was reminiscent of fish head curry, but was rather thin and hence I wasn’t very tempted to mop up the sauce with the baguettes and battered veggie sticks that came with this.
Then came my absolute favourite of the afternoon, the Flaming Cheeesy Baked Rice ($15.95). This dish is flame-grilled dory fillet coupled with Coriander and Rosemary Herb rice, with cheese all over. What I liked about this was that the rice was evenly infused with the cheese and the herbs, compared to other baked rice dishes that normally just have cheese on top.
The Ocean Perch Perfect (Regular; $15.95) comes with sambal sauce, garlic rice, and broccoli. The sambal sauce was sweet, and the fish was flaky and soft.
Our last main course was the sharing platter, Grillin ‘n Chillin ($39.95). Like its name implies, this dish is a mixture of hot and cold. I liked the prawns with Volcano sauce, which is a mixture of pineapple and chilli. It was sweet and brought out the sweetness of the prawns.
Desserts
Strawberry Flamin-Go ($4.95) – chocolate sauce at the bottom, followed by mango pudding, and topped with strawberries. The mixture of colours was very appealing, and it tasted light and refreshing.
Our final dessert was Sizzling Banana Fritters with Ice-Cream ($7.95) – chocolate ice-cream on two banana fritters in a hot plate. As it is placed on the table, coconut cream is poured on everything before your eyes, making everything sizzle. It was a good end to the meal, though vanilla ice-cream would have complemented this dish better.
Verdict
I highly recommend the Onion Glory and Flaming Cheeesy Baked Rice – these two stood out the most. Not just in terms of taste, but I really liked that they added their own spin on it – like using whole onion strips for the rings and infusing the cheese throughout the rice instead!
If you’re looking for a new place to eat, perhaps you could also consider trying an “old” place with a reinvented menu.
