We’ve all had thoughts about following the footsteps of The Crocodile Hunter, or try camping out in the wild at some point in time. But though planning the perfect adventure isn’t that easy, these 4 Jetabout Holidays’ South Australian tours are fully-planned – so all you’ve got to do is pack your bags and get ready to live out your Animal Planet dreams.

1. Family Fun tour – Spot penguins, seals, and swim with tuna

Granite Island penguin spotting

Contrary to popular belief that all penguins live in Antarctica, only 2 of 17 species reside in those icy glaciers. Home to the world’s smallest penguins, Granite Island lets visitors sneak a peek into the daily lives of Little Penguins coming home from a day at sea.

The tour lasts 2 hours, during which you’ll hop onto a horse-drawn tram to get to the island, which is located right next to the coastal town of Victor Harbor.

Swim with Southern Bluefin Tuna

Snorkeling enthusiasts, here’s your chance to get up close and personal with a school of Southern Bluefin Tuna. Submerged in the waters of Victor Harbor is where you’ll find the Oceanic Victor In-Sea Aquarium, where your underwater adventure begins.

Known as the ‘Ferraris of the Ocean’, these fish can swim at a top speed of 70 km/hr underwater, so swimmers keep up! For those that prefer staying dry, you can choose to feed them or simply view them from the underwater gallery.

Note: Full wetsuit and additional gear are provided, so there’s no need to worry about diving gear adding extra luggage weight.

Admirals Arch

The boardwalk along Kangaroo Island’s cliff face with make the leg burn all worth it – it takes you to the Admirals Arch lookout point, where you get stunning cave views looking straight out of an Indiana Jones movie set.

You can often find Fur-seal pups playing at their favourite spot; the rock pools beneath the arch, especially during breeding season in the summer. Dolphins can also be spotted, and if you visit between May and October, you may catch whales on their migratory route too!

Bring your Nat Geo dreams to life as you embark on an adventure along Port Adelaide River, which’ll have you kayaking through mangrove forests and ship graveyards. This is a good chance to pretend like you’re in Pirates of the Caribbean, as you paddle along shipwrecks.

And keep your eyes peeled for the Port River dolphins – the only wild dolphins in the world that live within a city.

Seal Bay Conservation Park

Seal Bay Conservation Park is the place to ‘go bush’ and watch Australian sea lions as they were meant to be seen, just like a wildlife adventurer would.

If you’d like a sip of fine wine, you can also visit Seppeltsfield Wines as part of the tour. One of Australia’s oldest wineries (167 years old), Seppeltsfield is known for their signature wine; the 100-year-old Para Tawny. Alternatively, take a trip down to Lyndoch Hill Rose Garden, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest rose garden, with nearly 4,000 varieties of roses!

3. Best of Adelaide tour – Seaside Towns, the Remarkable Rocks and Cape Borda Lightstation

The Remarkable Rocks

The Remarkable Rocks at Flinders Chase National Park truly earned their name. After all, it’s taken 500 million years of rain, wind, and pounding waves to create these majestic granite boulders, which are a near dupe for the Antelope Canyon in America. Take the time to create the perfect IG shot with the different angles and textures these rocks have to offer.

Cape Borda Lightstation

We might have seen lighthouses in movies and shipwreck films, but here’s your chance to see a fully operational lighthouse in real life. South Australia’s Cape Borda Lightstation still uses the original fog signal cannon (for foggy nights with low visibility), which is fired daily at 12:30pm.

Other highlights include the Victor Harbor Seal Rock & Wildlife Cruise, which takes you to Seal Island from the Granite Island Causeway. Alongside coastal seaside towns such as Port Elliot and Horseshoe Bay, you’ll get to spot dolphins and seals – it’ll be good to have a pair of binoculars handy too! Framed by two granite outcrops, the bay is a top spot for divers and snorkelers to explore a wide range of fish and coral.

Goolwa

Close to where the river meets the sea, Goolwa is an old river port on the Murray River. Every odd-numbered year, Goolwa hosts the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival – two action filled days of both water and land based events. You’ll also get to see the evolution of boats through the years, from modern day yachts to traditional wooden boats, as they sail across the river.

Kangaroo Island Walking Trails

Kangaroo Island is not only a haven for wildlife, it also has 23 hikes around the island, with walking trails to suit everybody. These trails range from an easy 200m, to a challenging 4.5km for the hiking enthusiasts. The trails also go past water holes, where hikers can get a chance to spot wild platypuses – only in Aussie!

But here’s a real challenge for the ultimate gungho warrior: the Heysen Trail. Spanning 1,200km, this is regarded as one of the greatest long distance walking trails in Australia. Find yourself passing through Flinders Ranges – South Australia’s largest mountain range – Adelaide Hills and Cape Jervis. The breathtaking landscapes will make the hike worth it for sure.
