Unless you stay around Marine Parade or the Joo Chiat-Katong area, you’ve probably never heard of Parkway Parade. However, for plenty of Easties, this is a familiar heartland mall that is soon going to be accessible to anyone living near the extended Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

That’s right – once TEL4 officially opens on 23rd June 2024, you can easily get to Parkway Parade via the Marine Parade Station. And we give you a few reasons to head there including trying the trendy Korean coin bread.

What to know about Parkway Parade

Opened in 1984, Parkway Parade consists of a 7-storey mall and 17 floors of offices. Until 2001 it housed one of the most iconic places in the East that no longer exists – Funworld – and you could spot kids from nearby schools hanging out at the arcade after classes ended.

Parents would also bring their children to play at the playground at the rooftop of the multi-storey carpark. Even the Burger King here used to have a ball pit and slide. Apart from all the fun stuff, the reason why families with kids frequented the mall was because of its many enrichment centres.

While the young ones attended these classes, parents could indulge in beauty services like facials or a haircut at one of the salons. For many years, the QB House outlet here offered $10 haircuts which were very popular.

Timezone Parkway Parade is one of the few outlets that has a bowling alley.

Just last year, Parkway Parade went through a revamp with Isetan, Cathay Cinema, and Giant closing down, paving the way for Timezone Parkway Parade and a FairPrice Xtra. While most of the units are open, some have yet to be occupied, so shoppers can look forward to new offerings as the year progresses.

What to eat at Parkway Parade

The food directory at this shopping centre is pretty diverse with classic favourites like Ya Kun Cafe, Fun Toast, Pepper Lunch, and Sushi Express.

To satisfy your dim sum cravings, you can head to Din Tai Fung, Paradise Classic, Putien, or Canton Paradise.

Halal-certified eateries include PastaMania Pronto x Kraftwich, Papparich, Swensen’s, and Sanook Kitchen. And if everyone wants to have their pick then Food Republic in the basement is probably the best option.

You will notice, however, that the food category is dominated by bakeries and dessert places. Most exciting perhaps is the newly opened outlet of B For Bagel where they are selling the viral Korean coin bread (from $5.50) as well as a variety of bagels.

You can also get pretzels from Auntie Anne’s, kueh from Bengawan Solo, cookies from Famous Amos, and tarts from Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart. Peeps looking for a slightly healthier option can treat yourself to fro-yo from Smöoy or shakes from Mr Coconut.

Those looking for bread or cakes can look at Twelve Cupcakes, Bread Talk, Cedele, Chalk Farm, Chateraise, and Four Leaves. Parkway Parade is truly a mini pastry haven!

As for BBT lovers, you’ve got 3 options – Ai-cha, KOI THÉ, and R&B Tea.

What to shop at Parkway Parade

MUJI fans must check out the new Parkway Parade branch because you’ll find exclusive items such as mini jute bags and certain colours of hard suitcases. The store is huge with dedicated sections for clothes, home furnishings, and even bicycles.

In fact, the shopping centre is a great place to find stuff for your abode with the likes of Hooga, IUIGA, Japan Home, and Daiso. There’s a whole slew of electronic and appliance stores too such as Best Denki and Harvey Norman.

When it comes to fashion, the mall is no different from most, housing the usual suspects – Uniqlo, Mango, and Cotton On. There are a couple of places to get footwear too such as Asics, Bata, and Crocs.

Given how family-friendly Parkway Parade is, it’s no surprise that there’s Mothercare, Toys “R” Us, and Smiggle too. The remaining directory features stores selling jewellery, eyewear, skincare, and gifts.

How to get to Parkway Parade

Until the new MRT station opens, the only way to get here is via car or bus. If you’re driving, there’s plenty of parking space at the multi-storey carpark or at the open carparks under the HDB blocks nearby.

Bus services that stop at ‘Parkway Parade’ or ‘Opposite Parkway Parade’ are: 15, 31, 36, 43, 47, 48, 134, 135, 196, 197, 401, and 966. And in case you’re wondering, the nearest MRT station right now is Paya Lebar but you’ll have to take a bus thereafter to get to Parkway Parade.

For reference, Parkway Parade is less than a 10-minute walk from i12 Katong, Roxy Square, and Katong Shopping Centre. Some of you may recognise the latter lesser-known mall as the one with the famous chicken rice stall.

Yes, you can wait till June when the TEL4 line makes Parkway Parade a lot more accessible. Or you can make the journey to the east now if something has sparked your interest. The mall also has seasonal festive displays, events, and sales at the atrium.
