Look back on life, and you’ll remember many firsts. The first time you rode a 360-degree roller coaster, the first time your heart skipped a beat for someone… These firsts keep us nervous and excited about life, and the same goes for our relationship with food.
This October, tons of new cafes and restaurants are making baby steps out into the world. And this makes for thrilling foodie adventures for us – who knows, we might just discover a new favourite or the most outrageous food. From adorable themed cafes to hidden heartland gems, here’s our list of 20 new restaurants and cafes that you’ve to check out this month.
“When nothing goes right, go left.” – Wise words from Cookie Monster got kids past the terror of growing up, and at Eyescream and Friends, you’ll be treated to his doppelganger on a plate! A famous shaved gelato shop from Barcelona, this is their first store ever in Asia.
The Complete Pack ($6.90) includes a gelato of your choice paired with 2 toppings – and the range is incredulous. From chocolates to gummies, cookies, and cornflakes, this is one dessert that’s bound to reignite the kid in you.

Fruit Loop – a doughnut cake made with lemon mousse, strawberry jelly and pistachios
Butterknife Folks isn’t your ordinary cafe. The name was borne out of its owners’ feeling that being part of the F&B industry is like “fighting a battle with only a butterknife”. But with just one look at their desserts, we think they’ve nothing to worry about.
Must tries are the Fruit Loop ($8) and Gelato with Waffle Fingers ($9) where your choice of gelato is creatively paired with a syringe of honey!

Fitspos. Workaholics. If you’re one or both of them, you’ll love JAR’D by Sarnies. What looks like a terrarium is in fact Singapore’s first mason jar salad, brought to you by the folks behind Sarnies Cafe.
This detox salad is a great on-the-go eat, and can be kept refrigerated for up to 2 days. We recommend the Tuna Tataki Salad ($12.50 for 750ml, $16 for 1 litre) to every JAR’D virgin. Grab it along with your morning coffee and never squish with crowds over lunch again!

At Sugar Lips, there’s no holding back on the sugary treats. And there’s no better way to describe them than a beautiful mess. Be it their dessert platter, drinks, or decor; they’re all bombastic, messy, and brimming with colour. Fulfil your rainbow fantasies and order a Dessert Platter ($12.90-$16.90) with a choice of cake, waffle or lava cake!

“Isn’t that just bak chor mee?!” – that was my first thought when I caught a glimpse of the new themed menu at Non-Entrée Desserts, titled “Back To The Future: 那些年我们吃过的回忆 (The Memories We Ate In The Past)”. But take a bite, and you’ll know it tastes worlds apart.
Inspired by nostalgic favourites of our childhood, this small joint on Rangoon Road has reinvented their desserts to resemble local fare like Bak Chor Mee ($14.90) and Tutu Kueh ($8.90), You’ll either love or hate it, but give it a shot before passing judgment.

Even Westies probably don’t know this. JEM has a mysterious 6th floor that overlooks the whole of Jurong East. And chillin’ on that floor is little artsy cafe – Poppy Pops, where you can customise your own popsicles! For the same price as a Magnum bar, you can indulge in a Poppy Classic ($4.80), and other frozen bar beauties without breaking the bank.

Hidden under a quiet HDB block in Ang Mo Kio, Prodigal Roasters is one cafe that knows how to brew a good cuppa. You’ll smell the aroma of freshly roasted beans the moment you walk in. From its minimalist Muji-like decor to the size of their menu, everything about this humble 8-seater store whispers quality over quantity.

One thing I can’t stand about Singapore cafes is that the best ones are always impossible to get to. So when I heard that d’Good Cafe opened a second outlet right in the middle of town, I was over the moon.
The 65-seat cafe will transport you to the heart of London with iconic red telephone booths and “Mind The Gap” signs plastered on the floor. Go for the newly introduced Poached Lobster Pasta ($22) made with fresh Maine lobster and their specialty English teas!

Many restaurants try to put a spin on local food, but truth is, not many succeed. I daresay COO Bistro is the real deal – a laid back bistro within COO, a new hipster boutique hostel, they whip up modern dishes with a splash of local flavour, inspired by Tiong Bahru’s hearty heritage.
Be sure to try their Prawn Noodles ($18) made with fettucine, smoke-grilled prawns and a chilli sauce that’ll wake your tastebuds up instantly!

At Kin Cow, you surely won’t be a kin to cows. Pronounced as “kin khao”, it means “eat rice” in Thai and the name’s a spin on the word cow as the restaurant specialises in all things beef. With 6 outlets in Thailand, they’re famed for Thai Beef Noodles and Singapore’s their first overseas franchise.
Their Thai Beef Noodles are priced according to parts of a cow: Brisket ($10.90), Short Rib ($12.90), Sirloin ($14.90), Ribeye ($17.90), and Wagyu ($22.90). Take your pick, and dig in!

With Oktoberfest just around the corner, we’re dying to get a hold of free-flow German craft beers and throw a party befitting of the biggest beer festival in the world. What better way to kick-off the Munchen celebrations than a visit to an all-new pure Bavarian restaurant in Singapore!
Their Belegte Brez’n ($12 – $15) sandwiches are made with pretzels, and their grilled sausages are really grilled without added oil or MSG. You’d also not want to miss out on the signature Pork Knuckle ($29.50) – crisp, juicy, and worth every calorie.

At Undici, 11 is the magic number. Everything from the restaurant’s name, to the number of pastas and pizzas on the menu, come in eleven! Deliberate or coincidence, even the live telecast of sports like EuroCup, NBA and Wimbledon is solely on Channel 11.
Their wood-fired Pizza Squares ($15) come in all-time classic flavours like Magherita and Prosciutto E Rucola pizzas. Also, you have to try their specialty dessert, Sorbetto al Negroni ($8) – that’s a frozen version of their signature Negroni cocktail.
