MEDZS Launches All New Mediterranean Breakfast Menu

About MEDZS Breakfast

Bonjour! Gutten Morgen! And Buongiorno! Breakfast doesn’t have to be a dull affair with MEDZS Bistro & Bar. Located just 100 steps away from Raffles City MRT station, this quaint and cozy bistro serves Mediterranean dishes for hungry office workers, and now Breakfast for the very first time. We popped by to try out their new menu and came away with these impressions.

Breakfast Items

Sandwiches

The best thing about these sandwiches is the variety of breads available. Each sandwich is crafted to fit its country of origin with their respective flavours and bread types in mind. Out of the four we tried, the one that stood out was the Olive Ciabatta with Prosciutto and Lyoner Ham ($12.90)

The olives gave the sandwich a nice tang and cut through some of the heartiness of the dish setting it apart from all its counterparts, and who doesn’t love prosciutto? The rest of the sandwiches suffer the same problem as the pizzas and don’t really make an impression.

An overall problem with the sandwiches is that they lack moisture – an easy fix if you request for more spread. If you like cheese you can also check out the Stuffed Cheesy Pull Apart Bread ($9.90), which is bread stuffed and topped with Parmesan, Mozzarella and Cheddar cheese. It’s a great dish to share since anyone can just pull apart a section of the bread easily.

French Bread Pizza

These pizzas are made with French bread instead of the traditional Italian style to give it a more breakfast oriented look. While it worked visually, I would still have preferred a thinner yet crunchier bread.

We were given a trio to taste , the classic Margherita ($12.90), Al Fruti De Mare ($13.90), and Pesto and White Mushroom Cream ($12.90). None of the three stood out, and while they didn’t taste bad, they weren’t memorable. They are available for take away though, and eating it on the go is easy and painless so it’s an option for those in a rush who want a quick bite.

Croissants

My recommendation here would be the croissants. The croissants provided during our tasting were the Lemon Crab Meat Mayo ($4.90), Turkish Spiced Chicken ($3.90), and Pork Ham and Cheese ($3.90). Definitely try the crab and the Turkish chicken ones. These two presented strong distinct flavours and didn’t feel dry unlike most of the items on the menu.

The crab croissant was pleasantly sour and tasted good overall, and the chicken was nicely done with a spicy kick. If you’re a purist though, you can’t go wrong with just a plain old croissant, which surprisingly manages to stand on its own pretty well.

Scrambled Eggs

One of the most classic breakfast dishes imaginable, MEDZS puts their own spin on the dish. You can choose between traditional Scrambled Eggs With Chicken Sausage, Mushroom and Bacon ($5.90) or opt for the healthier egg white alternative at $4.90 which is served with salmon gravlax and capers. While the scrambled eggs certainly met the “fluff” factor, I would have preferred it to be slightly more runny although some may find this to their taste. I enjoyed the scrambled egg whites more because the salty salmon complemented the blandness of egg whites.

In comparison, the flavour of the whites overshadowed that of the normal dish. It’s worth a try if you want something different.

Cakes

If you’re feeling especially sinful, try having cake for breakfast! We tried three different ones including the Rainbow Cake ($6.90), Lemon Tart ($6.90), and Salted Caramel Cheese Cake ($6.90) The Rainbow Cake looks really nice, and is a must-order item for many “foodstagrammers” out there. However, it was slightly too sweet for me although it was pleasantly moist. In general, not too bad!The Lemon Tart felt a little odd, there’s nothing inherently wrong with it but it lacked a sweet or balancing element. Most sour tarts are topped with a sweet meringue to balance the dish but this particular tart lacked that touch. Definitely try the Salted Caramel Cheese Cake, it’s moist, sweet without being overpowering, and has a real melt-in-your-mouth quality to it. It was the only cake we finished and talked extensively about.

Service

The bistro offers a takeaway option for their breakfast items if you prefer to eat in the office or on the go. One of the greatest things though is the ability to top up your breakfast item with coffee for only $1.50 – a good price for a complete meal.

MEDZS is also running a 50% off promotion for all takeaway items till 31st March 2015 which is another great excuse to give some of these dishes a shot. I highly recommend taking the opportunity and it’s not just because i’m incredibly cheap!

Conclusion

MEDZS does a good job of offering the office crowd an alternative option for breakfast. While some items fail to impress, there are some really good ones that stand out from the menu. The prices here are competitive and the breakfast top up option really makes the meals value for money. Be sure to check this place out!
