National Day’s right around the corner, and this means two things: a long weekend, and a reason to celebrate with the fam. For some patriotic feels dotted with nostalgia, head on over to KINEX mall (formerly oneKM) to feast on old-school snacks and play old-school games from now till 14th August 2019.
For this celebratory season, you can expect lots of ang ku kueh–inspired events, freebies and locally-inspired activities at the mall.
Here are the highlights to look forward to:
Soft, chewy, and sweet – these are the words you’d use to describe a good piece of ang ku kueh. Back in the day, these delicate little desserts were a pretty common treat.
Here, KINEX has collaborated with local pastry company Kueh Ho Jiak to put a modern, healthy spin on the traditional snack. Be sure to catch these events that pay homage to the star of the event: the ang ku kueh.

It’s not every day you get to witness history being made. Kueh Ho Jiak will attempt to make the largest ever ang ku kueh for the Singapore Book of Records. Bystanders needn’t go hungry watching this delicious feat come to life – there’ll be plenty of mini ones going around.

Venue: Level 1 Main Atrium
Should your love for ang ku kueh extend beyond enjoying it as a snack, here’s something to take note of: Spend $150 (or $100 for U-POPP members) and you might be able to take home one of these cute little Ang Ku Kueh Girl lunch bags!
These bags were specially curated for KINEX by local character Ang Ku Kueh Girl.
Despite the changes that Singapore has undergone throughout the years, one thing has stayed the same, and that’s the love for food. Pop by the Go Local Food and Game Fair for a bevy of local treats like dragon’s beard candy, kueh lapis and poh chew soon kueh for you to feast on.
Some biscuits from your childhood will make an appearance, like gem biscuits and flying fish biscults.
If you’re itching to work off some carbs after stuffing yourselves, pay a visit to the game stations around. Relive your childhood with old-school games like hopscotch, five stones, carom and chapteh.
Look out for the hopscotch mat at the atrium

People of all ages enjoy a game of Bingo every now and then. That triumphant feeling of screaming “Bingo!” after striking out 5 numbers in a row is a really satisfying feeling.
If you want to savour that feeling again, spend $20 to redeem a bingo card and pop by the ‘Live’ Bingo Draw. Fortune favours the lucky, and you might just be one of the 30 shoppers to walk away with $15,000 worth of UOL e-vouchers.
Dates: 3rd August 2019, 1PM & 5PM
Venue: Level 1 Main Atrium
Paying tribute to one of the oldest playgrounds in Singapore, KINEX will have a giant dragon bouncy castle that takes after the famous Toa Payoh Dragon Playground. Look out for a ball pit in Singapore’s national colours of red and white too. The kids can let loose on here while you browse the surrounding booths.
To pay homage to Singapore’s rich heritage, pop by KINEX mall from now to 14th August 2019 and check out the ‘It’s All Things Local’ Festival. Be sure to head over on the weekend of 3rd August 2019 for the Bingo lucky draw and ang ku kueh workshops – just in time for a dose of patriotism just before National Day.
Familiarise yourself with delicious traditional food and take part in nostalgic activities in the spirit of celebration. Check out the new restaurants at the basement too. And while you’re at it, take some selfies with Ang Ku Kueh Girl who’ll be gracing the event on 3rd August 2019. It’ll be a great way to get the fam together and experience old-school activities in the flesh.
