It’s that time of the year again – pop-up booths touting mooncakes and lanterns are dotting the island, setting shopping mall atriums abuzz. Having a sweet-tooth, sinking my teeth into thick slices of mooncake is something I look forward to every year. Admittedly, the delicious traditional confection can be pricey, but hey, this festive season only comes once a year – indulge away! #YOLO
Which is our good luck then, that discount deals are aplenty when you have the right tools. Simply pay with a DBS/POSB Credit/Debit card, and you’ll get to enjoy discounted Mid-Autumn treats at these traditional restaurants:

A purveyor of our favourite local kuehs, Old Seng Choong is a comeback warrior that we’re #thankful for. While most bakery owners these days prefer making elaborate European treats, experienced patissier Daniel Tay decided to revive his father’s traditional confectionary which folded two decades ago in 1996.

If the thought of jostling with the crowd at mooncake fairs turns you off, the previously brick-and-mortar establishment now offers delivery services, so order away at their selection of White Lotus mooncakes (from $52 for sets of 4). If you prefer something with a zesty kick, try the Red Bean Orange Peel with Yolk Blend & Pine Nuts ($58 for 4).
Old Seng Choong operates online but does have temporary booths from time to time. Visit their website to find out where the latest ones are.

It’s time to reacquaint yourself with those little piggy mooncakes you used to nibble on as a kid. East Ocean brings a taste of nostalgia with added refinement with their Mini Golden Piglet mooncake ($8). For flakey melt-in-your-mouth goodness, their signature Teochew classic, the Mini Crispy Yam mooncake ($52 for 9 pieces), is a must-try.

Putting a fun twist on traditional Teochew fare, East Ocean Teochew Restaurant is known for its adorable (and totally Insta-worthy) animal-shaped dim sum that would make even the most ang moh pai Singaporean excited. Though many dim sum eateries serve pig-shaped paus, East Ocean takes things up a notch with atypical designs like bees, elephants, and hedgehogs. I’ve never come across dim sum so unique!

Mooncakes are sinfully calorie-laden, but here’s a healthier option that you won’t have to feel guilty for wolfing down: Apart from classic favourites with white lotus and assorted nuts, Noodle Place Restaurant also serves a Golden Jade Spirulina mooncake (from $55 per box, and from $13.80 per piece) – a mouth-watering creation infused with the vitamin-rich algae.

Conveniently located right next to Somerset MRT, the casual dining joint is also well-loved for its succulent roast pork and duck, which you can enjoy with a bowl of springy Hong Kong wanton noodles or piping hot congee.

With hundreds of awards under its belt including a Michelin Star at its Golden Palace outlet at Paragon, Crystal Jade is easily one of the top Chinese restaurants in the island. If all the sweetness is too much for you and you’re craving some savoury sharpness that isn’t just limited to salted egg yolk, try their Signature Mixed Nuts with Ham mooncake ($33 for 2, $60 for 4).

With all the desserts at her newly-opened flagship restaurant-bar looking like intricate pieces of art, it’s no surprise that Janice Wong has also brought forth an aesthetic aspect to her 2016 mooncake collection. Each elegantly marbled Mochi Mooncake (U.P. $68 for 9, early bird at $54.40) has an inner layer of mochi and chocolate shell encasing a generous helping of homemade white lima bean paste – a healthier alternative to the usual lotus.
In proud tribute to our local roots, these mooncakes come in unorthodox flavours you never thought would exist such as Chilli Padi, Ginger Flower Rojak, and Kaffir Lime Caramel. Tasting the medley of flavours will certainly be a rousing experience!
