First Look: CHOCTOBER! Chocolate-Themed Dining At Concorde Hotel This October

About Concorde Hotel

Being a huge chocolate lover, I jumped at the chance to try out Concorde Hotel’s new Choctober menu that launched this October.

Concorde Hotel was never known for their culinary prowess. However, in line with their desire to rebrand themselves as a new, innovative hotel, the culinary team headed by Executive Chef Sunny Goh decided to come up with new dishes involving the use of chocolate.

Once we arrived at Spices Cafe, we were greeted by a smiling Chef Goh who ushered us into the dining room. The grandiose decor and old-style glamour of the dining room set the mood for dinner and we were excited to begin.

The Food At Concorde Hotel

We were first served an assortment of chocolate cocktails – a colourful concoction of kahlua, blue curacao and coconut milk. While the drinks were each unique, I felt the alcohol content was too high for some, and I couldn’t taste any chocolate in the others. These cocktails are also available at the Lobby Lounge.

Our first dish was the Ocean Prawns and Avocado with Light Chocolate Mayonnaise. This was a light starter and perfect for setting the tone for the tasting. The chocolate mayonnaise was not overpowering and complemented the prawns and the avocadoes well.

Next up was the Fresh Seafood Soup with Chocolate Milk. We had it served hot, but guests have the option of having it served chilled as well. To me it tasted like a seafood bisque, but I felt chocolate wasn’t the hero of this dish. I only tasted a vague hint of chocolate milk at the beginning, which was overpowered by the taste of seafood as I progressed.

Finally, we were treated to the Roast Rib Eye of Beef with Chocolate Red Wine Jus served with Assorted Vegetables and Potatoes. We were given a generous portion and I felt the beef was well-cooked. The chocolate red wine jus definitely added an interesting taste to the dish, but I felt the beef was already good on its own.

What better way to tie everything together than a chocolate dessert of lava cake. The cake was moist and had a soft chocolate core, but wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.

The Verdict

As an avid chocolate fan I was a tad disappointed about that chocolate did not feature as prominently in the dishes as I expected them to. However, the flavours created in the dishes and drinks are definitely unique and original creations.

We only just tried a few of the dishes the Choctober Festival had to offer, but you can look out for others such as the Smoked Salmon dipped in White Chocolate and Roast Chicken with White Chocolate BBQ Sauce that are available in the Harvest of the Sea Buffet Dinner. All dishes sampled above are available on the a-la-carte menu.
