Dining on fine food without going broke

Source: @jackidos

You really do not have to blow a few hundred dollars just to dine at celebrity chef restaurants in Singapore. Of course, this does not apply to all of them esteemed, posh restaurants out there but if you look hard enough, and perhaps pop by for lunch to grab some of their exclusive lunch promos, you can end up saving a fair bit of money without compromising on your celebrity restaurant experience at all.

To keep things more affordable for all of you, we have done the hard work and picked out options that are considerably more inexpensive, right from those that start from just $18.

From $18

1. Forest森

In the mood for some atas contemporary Chinese cuisine? Make your way to local celebrity Chef Sam Leong’s restaurant, Forest森. People who are on the hunt for the cheapest options can skip their 3-course, 4-course and 5-course set menus but instead go for a la carte options like Fish Noodles ($18) stir fried with X.O. chili sauce accompanied with deep fried five spice duck drumstick, Tiger Prawn Rice Vermicelli Soup ($20) served with Chinese wine in chicken consommé and more.

For something that strays a little from what you probably normally go for, tantalize your taste buds with some authentic Straits-Chinese fare done with a modern, refined twist at Malcolm Lee’s Candlenut, the world’s first Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant. Pair your bowl of fragrant white rice with favourites like Buah Keluak of Braised Local Chicken, Peranakan Signature Black Nut Sambal ($22) or Local Squid, Sambal Belachan, Cherry Tomato, Red Onions ($20) if you want to fill your tummy without breaking the bank.

Psst, they have plenty of other options for you to choose from, too.

Whether you are a foodie or aspiring chef, you would have watched many of Jamie Oliver’s cooking programmes on TV plenty of times, plausibly with some drool on your T-shirt after seeing his completed plated dishes. Although Jamie probably wouldn’t be cooking at Jamie’s Italian you can have your meal without burning a big hole in your pocket when you go for dishes like Our Famous Prawn Linguine ($18.50), Wild Mushroom & Winter Greens Risotto ($26.50), Courgette Pollo ($24.50).

4. Pizzeria Mozza

Source

Ears up, pizza fanatics! Time to drop those delivery pies you’ve been a fan of ever since you learnt how to use a phone. Pizzas at Pizzeria Mozza actually cost just a tad bit more than those more mainstream ones that we shall not name. For those who are not in the know, Pizzeria Mozza is the brainchild of Mario Batali, previously of Iron Chef America and famous wearer of Crocs.

Go for the simpler (aka cheaper) za’s, such as the Margherita ($27) and Funghi misti ($30). The ingredients might be less fancy, but Mozza’s dough is well worth the price. For an even better deal, make it a point to try their Express Lunch ($28) which comes with the choice of an antipasti and a pizza from the express lunch menu.

Express lunch hours (Monday to Thursday, excluding P.H): 12pm-5pm
Address: The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Galleria Level, B1-42-46,10 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018956

5. Bread Street Kitchen

Surely everybody knows who Gordon Ramsay is by now. He’s that shouty Scottish guy with way too many wrinkles commonly seen cursing at contestants on various reality cooking shows. Occasionally though, he makes use of this culinary background to open restaurants around the world. Bread Street Kitchen is one of these places.

Nestled in Marina Bay Sands, BSK features a British European menu, which harken back to the celebrity chef’s roots. Meals that are less steeply priced include BSK Short Rib Beef Burger ($28), and Traditional Fish & Chips ($28).

For a la carte lunch, the price is $38 no matter whether you choose to order Braised-Seared Beef Short Rib, New Zealand Sustainable Fresh Fish, Compressed Lamb Rib-Crispy Brick, or Crispy Skin Barramundi.

Just a tip – you need to reserve tables by the tank in advance if you want that magical experience to take your dining experience in a celebrity chef restaurant up a notch. Additionally, you are entitled to a 10% discount on your a la carte items when you pay with a Mastercard card.

8. Spago by Wolfgang Puck

Source

CUT by Wolfgang Puck has sky high prices that would not fit right in our list but his second restaurant at Marina Bay Sands does. Although you can order Grilled Iberico Pork Chop ($48) or Steamed Norwegian Salmon ($42) from their lunch menu, Spago’s Express Prix Fixe Menu 3 courses ($45) is a much better deal that you should go for.

The latter comes with a starter with choice of Chicken ‘Laksa’ Spring Roll, Pan Seared Pork Dumplings or Big Eye Tuna Tartare Cones; a main course of either Steamed Norwegian Salmon (yes, the same $42 item from their a la carte menu), Grilled Angus Beef Burger, Grilled Mediterranean Prawn Salad, Grilled Organic Chicken Club, or Soft French Omelet; and a dessert Coconut-Passion Fruit Trifle.

For those who are a little confused, TungLok Heen was previously known as Chinois by Susur Lee.

Even though their Deluxe Menu A ($45) requires at least 2 people to dine in, it is pretty good value considering that it is the least expensive set available yet it comprises a slew of dishes like Crisp-fried Fish Fillet with Butter and Cereal, Braised Sea Treasure Broth in Noble ‘Tanfu’ Sauce topped with crispy chinese ham, Singapore-style Wok-fried Boston Lobster accompanied with fried ‘mantou’ and garlic, Stir-fried Seasonal Greens with monkey head mushrooms, Braised Noodle with Scallion Oil accompanied with braised pork belly in chinese wine, Chilled Cream of Pumpkin and Black Forbidden Rice with coconut sherbet and chinese pastry atop.
