An Inside Look at the RWS Durian Fest 2014

About RWS Durian Fest 2014

Back for the third time, the RWS Durian Fest was met with a huge turnout at the Coliseum at Hard Rock Hotel. Served buffet style, hundreds of durian lovers got their hands dirty as they sampled seven different varieties of the spikey fruit including D24, D13 and the king of kings, Mao Shang Wang.

The event will take place on the 10th and the 13th of July. Tickets to the event are sold out but not to worry, there’s always next year. Here’s a quick look at what you can look forward to at the durian fest.

The Fruits at RWS Durian Fest

The stars of the show are of course the durians. The seven premium varieties that were available for durian connoisseurs to sample were D24, D13, Mao Shan WangJin Feng, Hu Lor, Zhu Jiao, and Ang Kar. Out of those seven we only managed to sample four. The other 3 types had run out about one hour into the event despite us ordering all seven at the very start from our server. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, we recommend going to the front of the stage to get the durians yourself as the servers at the event were extremely overwhelmed.

Out of the durians we managed to try, we liked the Mao Shang Wang the best. The flesh was creamy and thick and tasted bitter with just a little sweetness. The quality for the durians available were also top notch. Having loved and eaten durians my whole life, I have never had durians so thick and flavourful to the point that you’ll be able to differentiate one from the other. You also won’t find any durians that are on the watery  or sour side at this event.

We also tried the Zhu Jiao, D13 and Hong Xia variety of durians. Between those three I liked the D13 durians the best as they were bitter like the Mao Shang Wang but sweeter. The Zhu Jiao was too one dimensional while the Hong Xia durian was too sweet.

We all know how jelak durians can be so the local seasonal fruits available like the mangosteens, jackfruits and duku langsats really helped to make sure we didn’t get sick of eating too many durians. There were also durian based desserts such as durian cakes and durian Potong ice cream to offer more variety than just durian upon durian.

The Verdict

To make the most out of RWS Durian Fest, we recommend that you come with a group of friends so that you can try all the different varieties without forcing yourself to finish the last few remaining seeds in each husk. You can also all take turns heading to the front to collect your durians so that you won’t miss out on the other varieties like we did.
