4 Highlights From The Affordable Art Fair 2017 That Even Art Newbies On A Budget Can Appreciate

The art fair for everyone

Tons of us love checking out the newest exhibitions to hit our museums and galleries, but that doesn’t mean we understand what truly goes behind a painting – ‘cuz hey, as long as it looks good for the gram, right?

But art goes beyond just a pretty picture, and luckily for us, we don’t have to be aficionados to get that. Happening from 17th-19th November, Affordable Art Fair is the perfect platform for both newbies and pros to come together to appreciate the intricate world of art. From free workshops to interactive installations, here’s what you can look forward to:

1. Interactive installations where art comes to life

Instead of merely visiting a bunch of exhibitions at galleries and trying to understand the deep, complex description plaques, here’s your chance at being part of the art too.

The fair will be presenting a Special Projects platform, made up of multi-media artworks by various artists. Visitors can have a visual feast while exploring art in their various forms, such as life-sized digital pieces and sound installations, along with video performances.

Don’t forget to drop by the #Spotlight Showcase, which’ll be featuring works by up-and-coming artists featured for the first time at the fair in Singapore!

2. Create your own artwork – all while being temporarily blind

Watch artists give live demos!

Being a highly visual treat, it might be a little hard to grasp the concept of producing art while blind, but not at Affordable Art Fair. In efforts to raise awareness for sufferers of cataracts in Indonesia, the event will be holding their CATARART Project, where participants can come together to create works of art all while being “temporarily blind” via a VR headset.

3. Level up your skills with free art tours and workshops

If “Art for Dummies” is on your list of books-to-get, don’t sweat, because you’ll be able to get the 101 you need with the free workshops and tours that’ll be held at the fair. From ancient granite sculptures to the Impressionist era, learn all about art history through the Art Education Programme.

And if you’re itching to get your hands dirty – with some paint, of course – attend a free Japanese woodblock carving and printmaking workshop, which will be led by Australian artist Jennifer Lim. We hear participants will get to learn a 400-year-old technique while they’re at it!

Woodblock Printmaking Talk and and Workshop – A Cross Cultural Journey
Date: 19th November 2017, Sunday
Time: 12PM – 1PM
Note: Her workshop on 17th Nov is during the Arty-Licious Evening, where you’ll need to pay separately.

4. Get up-close with artworks by home-grown and international artists

It’s always heartwarming to see local artists getting recognition in the arts landscape in Singapore and internationally. 8 finalists from this year’s Young Talent Programme will be showcasing their works at the fair! Catch works from 4 of our very own local-born artists – Faris Nakamura, Kylie Woon, Ong Si Hui, and Zulkhairi Zulkiflee.

Other finalists are Xinwei Che from China, SG-based Hong Kong artist Jamela Law, Korean artist Bo Sung Yom who’s based in Singapore, and Liza Markus from Indonesia.

Bonus: Play with claw machines to win free beauty products

When you’ve explored the various installations and workshops to your heart’s content, chill for a bit at the fair’s Arty-Licious Evening – a night of fun and games guaranteed.

Soak up the artsy atmosphere along with some espresso martinis courtesy of Sarnies. And you can’t call it a night until you’ve tried your luck with the event’s claw machines, which will be carrying beauty products from Mamonde for you to take home.
