Batam is a popular destination with Singaporean families, and it’s no wonder why. It’s just an hour away by ferry, is flush with kid-friendly things to do, and has loads of shopping and dining options that are relatively affordable.
If you’ve been there and done all that, take a walk on the wild side and consider bringing your fam to Palace Cave Teluk Nipah: a little-known gem on the Indonesian island.

Located off the south-eastern shore of Batam, Palace Cave Teluk Nipah is a 90-minute drive then 20-minute boat ride away from the city. It’s the getaway of getaways if you are looking for a place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life, and to reconnect with Mother Nature.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted by the large, natural rock formation in which Palace Cave Teluk Nipah is hidden.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can choose to go inside the cave and see what it has to offer. According to photos online, there’s an arched tunnel which you can walk through to get into an IG-worthy grotto, flooded with natural light from above.

Then, there’s an underground cavern that’s a little dark, so you will have to proceed with care.

Alternatively, trek up the cliffs for a birds’-eye view and Insta-worthy photos with the bay and its crystal-clear waters. We do, however, recommend having proper footwear for this hike.

Be sure to have your swimwear with you, because you can take a dip here if you’re feeling a little warm. While you’re at it, try your hand at spotting marine animals such as starfish. Be careful to not step on them or disrupt their natural environment – this means no littering or taking them home with you.
At time of writing, there aren’t any restaurants or convenience stores on the island. So, you might want to grab a bite before your excursion here, or pack some light snacks along with you.

Palace Cave Teluk Nipah can only be accessed via a 20-minute boat ride from Reviola Beach. Not to worry, there are speedboats from the beach that you can book to get here. Prices are heavily dependent on the vendors, as well as the day of the week. Last we heard, prices were around 300,000 RP (~S$25.70) for a two-way return journey for up to 6 pax.
Alternatively, you can join day tours which include Palace Cave Teluk Nipah on their itineraries. If you’re going on your own, set aside at least half a day for the trip.

The next time you travel to Batam, you might want to consider going off the beaten path to explore this lesser-known gem. Take it as a retreat of sorts to rejuvenate and energise yourself, coming back refreshed and ready to face the grind of school, work and life.
