Hong Kong’s Very Own Swimming Shed in Sai Wan
We all know about Victoria Harbour. You know, those tall buildings in Hong Kong that light up the night sky and ships that come in and out of the busy port. But you probably didn’t know that further down along the same body of water, there lies Sai Wan Swimming Shed, where you can take a dip in the open sea!
In the early 90s, swimming sheds were built along the sea shore, offering locals a spot to relax in the open waters. Today, Sai Wan is the only remaining swimming shed in Hong Kong, dating back to the 1950s. Few people swim here these days, with most visitors sporting bulky photography equipment instead.
The scenic view is an amazing and eye-opening sight to behold, and has become more of a photographer’s paradise today. And that’s exactly what it was for us who didn’t dare to wage our lives against the strong waves crashing in.
Come dusk, the shed is one of the most pretty places to admire the sunset. But beyond a beautiful snapshot, the place felt like a magical hideout.
Although just a stone’s throw away from the city, you’ll forget that you’re even in Hong Kong, as you stand near the cliff and feel with all your senses as the waves crash into the pier – the smell of the sea, the droplets of water touching your skin, and the therapeutic sounds of the splash.
If you have time to spare amidst your food trails and shopping, this is one place you should visit. It’ll make for a different Hong Kong experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
How to get there:
Sai Wan Swimming Shed is located near Kennedy Town MTR station, just 4 stops away from Central. Take Exit A, and you’ll find Green Minibus 58 that will get you there in under 30 minutes. A single trip costs 6.90HKD.
You can also walk about 15 minutes from Kennedy Town MTR along Victoria Road, until you see the red and white sign below. Head down the staircase and you’ll see a green shed right before reaching the pier!
