Our well-loved Songkran holidays had been postponed from April due to the spread of COVID-19. After 2 months of waiting, we now have a signal that the water festival might be back in July.

Two long holidays will be combined

Known as a dominantly Buddhist country, Thailand has a day off for certain events in the Buddhist calendar. This year, we have two Buddhist holidays in July – Asarnha Bucha Day (4th July 2020) and Buddhist Lent Day (6th July 2020). So, we will have long a weekend with one extra day off in-lieu from 4th-6th July 2020.

Combining this with the updated Songkran Festival dates which are planned to be postponed to 7th-9th July 2020, people in Thailand might have a long holiday from 4th-9th July 2020

However, the plan has yet to be confirmed. Cultural minister Ittipol Khunpluem said there will be a meeting on 5th June 2020 to discuss the new proposed dates for this year’s Songkran holidays.

Due to the rainy season and COVID-19, we are not sure whether there will be any water splashing events in Thailand this year. Stay tuned for updates.
