Hor Mok Jeh Sri at Sampeng Market
Hor Mok, or Thai Curry Custard, is traditionally made by steaming – but this street food cart has been doing something interesting by offering customers with a grilled version. Take a few steps from Yaowarat Road to Sampeng Market and try some delicious grilled seafood curry custard from Hor Mok Jeh Sri, which has been at it for over 30 years.
What to order
Hor Mok Yang (grilled curry custard) at Hor Mok Jeh Sri comes with 6 seafood toppings including shrimp, crab, fish, and horseshoe crab eggs. Everything costs just ฿25, or ฿100 for 4 pieces. The shop sells over 1,000 pieces each day, so you know it’s something you gotta try!
Squid, fish, and crab toppings
The curry custard is made from coconut milk and red curry, wrapped together with toppings in banana leaves, which add extra flavour to the custard. It is then grilled over charcoal, giving it a nice smoky aroma.
Even though it’s grilled, the custard is soft and juicy. It has a rich taste and scent from galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and red chillies that are included in red curry. The custard is not too spicy, so everybody can enjoy it without worrying about the heat.
Another signature is the chilli and fish sauce that is different from other stores. It’s a mixture of sour and salty from the lime and added shallots.
Locals usually order the Grilled Curry Custard with Rice and Egg (฿40) topped with their signature fish sauce.
