Supersized Japanese food in Thong Lor
Genpukan may look like any other Japanese grill house you would find around Bangkok, but this restaurant in Thong Lor serves giant-sized Karubi don and Butadon (beef and pork rice bowl) that would leave all foodies gasping.
Succulent meat and veggies
Just a few minutes’ walk from Thong Lor BTS station, we found ourselves at a table in Genpukan with a street view. The set-up looks much like how a Japanese izakaya is like.
Once ready, we ordered both their Karubi don and Butadon to try, each weighing around 1kg.
Despite their super sizes, each dish was only ฿199 (~USD6.50). And in case you fear that’s not enough for your hungry tummy, you can even add more meat for just ฿99 (~USD3) for both pork and beef options.
However, the add on comes as fresh beef/pork, which you must cook yourself at the table’s grill.
Unlike some locations where “giant foods” come with 80% carbs and 20% ingredients, the huge portions here aren’t just a mountain of steamed rice. Each dish came with layers after layers of grilled meat around it, topped with a rich egg, kimchi, and veggies.
Both the beef and pork came sliced and thoroughly grilled, giving it an aromatic charcoal scent. I personally preferred the leaner cut of beef, but if you prefer a bit of fat in your meat then I’d recommend going for pork.
The meat was well seasoned with Japanese-style sauce which had a sweet and savoury taste. Mixing the yolk around made everything really creamy, which was cut nicely by the crunchy vegetables and spicy kimchi.

Needless to say, Genpukan’s Karubi Don and Butadon are best when sharing with friends or family. Where a weekend dinner or after-work get together, this restaurant is perfect for any occasion since it’s super easy to get to.
