Dogs can be fiercely loyal companions that will stick with us through thick and thin when showered with love and affection. A recent case of this was shown by a puppy that nearly died after she was born, but was saved by helpful Malaysians who ensured she was healthy and able to live more than just a few days.

After given a new lease of life by the family of 5, the puppy rescued the family from a fire that broke out in their home – by waking them up from their sleep to alert them of the flames.

On 23rd June 2021, around 5AM, a house at Eastern Garden at Teluk Intan in Perak caught on fire, as reported by Bernama on 24th June. One of the 5 residents in the home, who goes by A. Vimala, discovered the blazing flames in the centre of her house, around their prayer altar.

But she wouldn’t have known of the fire if not for Anandaveli – an 8-month-old puppy that the family had cared for and saved when the puppy’s life was waning away after birth.

According to Vimala’s account of the incident, Anandaveli had tugged on her hair, face, ears and pyjamas to wake her up. Thinking that the puppy had been asking for water, she brushed off the tugs at first. When Vimala finally did take notice and woke up from her sleep due to the puppy’s non-stop frantic pulls, she saw that a fire had broken out in her home.

Because of Anandaveli’s insistence on waking her owner up, which Vimala cited as the puppy’s “first instinct”, Vimala was able to alert her husband and children, between the ages of 18 and 23, of the fire too.

Her son, who had to return to the burning house, was able to heroically carry his father – who has been paralysed since suffering from a stroke – out of the house too.

In the end, the entire family was able to escape the fire in time, all thanks to the puppy.

The fire was put out around 6.30AM, over an hour after the incident took place, by 12 firemen from Teluk Intan Fire and Rescue Station. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the blaze, although the family is said to have suffered a loss of over RM50,000 due to the fire.

Pasir Bedamar State Assemblyman, Terence Naidu, has offered to help the family find food and monetary assistance via the district office’s disaster fund. The family will also be given a new home through the national People Housing Project.
