Man gets attacked at Petronas petrol station at 4AM

Violence is never the answer to anything. No matter how dire the situation, it’s always best to get the authorities to handle any and all serious disputes. Nonetheless, even with the MCO affecting operating hours of businesses in KL, leaving towns quiet once past 8PM, several individuals were captured on camera attacking an unarmed man with sticks, a traffic cone, and parangs at the crack of dawn in Cheras at 4AM on 20th January 2021.

Warning: The footage contains violent images that some viewers may find disturbing.

A black-and-white CCTV footage of the incident was shared to several Facebook and Twitter groups, including Info Roadblock JPJ/POLIS. While the footage did not show what happened that led to the attack or its outcome – only of the incident itself – it was reportedly said that the attack took place at a Petronas petrol station on Jalan Besar, Taman Cheras Perdana in Cheras.

The 6-minute long clip began with several individuals running frantically along a road around 4.20AM, as seen in the time stamp of the CCTV footage. Around the 1:30-minute mark, 6 individuals were seen popping out from various corners of the street to gang up on a man, just along the curb that divides the entrance and exit points of the petrol station.

Due to the chaotic nature of the video, it is unclear where everyone involved in the fight came from. A commentary from the person watching the footage in the video suggested that the attackers might have came from “a mamak”, and that the attacked man “fell off his motorbike”.

The man who was attacked was wearing a motorcycle helmet, which made the deduction reasonable. And it was lucky too, because his helmet was his only protection as the group of men rained down blows on him.

In the 6-against-1 fight, the attackers could be seen gathering around the unarmed man, taking their turns hitting him with what looked to be parangs and rotans. Showing just how angry they were with him, at one point in the video, one of the attackers reached for a traffic cone lying on the street to throw at the man’s head.

The attack of the man lasted for over a minute and a half. His assailants did not let up. Just when the fight looked to be over, 2 men returned to attack him once again. It was only after a truck drove off that the man was finally left alone.

According to the commentary in the video, the truck was one of 3 cars, including a towing truck and Proton Saga, that presumably belong to the gang of attackers. The vehicles were seen circling back to the area several times.

After the assailants finally left, the man who was attacked managed to stand up after a failed attempt. But instead of calling for help, or getting back on the vehicle he might have arrived to the scene on, he looked at the main road one last time before seemingly “jumping” into what looks to be a “hole” next to a petrol pump. Because of the angle of the camera, the man looked as if he had “disappeared” into the ground.

Parang-wielding gang attacks man at 4AM

No matter the circumstances, physically assaulting someone is a criminal offence and punishable according to the law. As shown by this viral hotpot slapping incident involving a supposed dato who was subsequently arrested, violence is never the answer to anything. This incident is yet another reminder that we should not engage in any form of assault be it in broad daylight or in the dead of night.

We hope that this assault incident at the petrol station will be fully investigated by the authorities.
