Malaysians rush to sell off “rare” CorningWare dishes

It feels like ages ago since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented in Malaysia – 18th March 2020, if you’ve forgotten. But it hasn’t been that long since we heard about a local woman raking in the bucks from selling Super Rings at RM60 each on eBay. And it seems like the trend for common items selling at high prices isn’t stopping there.
Now it’s being reported that CorningWare pyrex dishes from the 1970s are also being auctioned off at seriously high prices on eBay – we’re talking up to RM24,000 for a casserole dish. But the twist in the story is that the said cookware type happens to be something that many Malaysians can find in their mums’ pantries.
Dish lists for high prices on online shopping websites
According to a report by Harian Metro on 13th May 2020, the high value of these vintage dishes from CorningWare was spotted by a 32-year-old Malaysian woman on Facebook. She stumbled across listings for them on eBay, where she saw it selling at hefty price tags of RM5,000 to RM24,000.
According to her, the reason for the shocking prices is the high demand for the dish from antique collectors overseas, especially in the US where it originated. So she decided to look through her mum’s pantry to find the exact same set which she recalls being used everyday at her family home, to find out its true value online.
A particular “Spice of Life” casserole dish with leaves-and-vegetables motif can be seen listed on eBay with high prices, and with sellers from both the US and Malaysia.

But before you rush to raid your mum’s pantry for similar-looking dishes, you should note that selling CorningWare dishes was also a trend that swept the US earlier this year in January 2020. Antique experts even came out to debunk the high value for these dishes, as they really aren’t all that rare, as reported by Insider.
Malaysians joke about raiding their mums’ pantries for rare dishes
We did a quick search on eBay and found out that there are over 20,000 listings for CorningWare products – which just goes to show you how common the items are. This is why netizens could find the “rare” cookware so easily in their houses – and are joking about how much these cookware could fetch when sold online.
Twitter user @morpheuse was one of the first people to point out that fact. On 14th May 2020, he tweeted out screenshots of the story from Harian Metro, as well as high-priced listings for the dishes he found on Lazada and eBay.
Jumping on the bandwagon, Twitter user @nrlhsn70 even joked about the conversation that she and her mum would have if she took the dish her mum often used to hold rendang. She tweeted, “Mother: ‘Where is the dish?’ Me: ‘I sold it, mum’”, followed by an emoticon crying tears of joy.

Another Twitter user @mukhtaramar showed just how common it is, tweeting a photo of his family’s cabinet with 2 sets of the cookware and saying, “Oh my. I looked through my cupboard and found tens of thousands of it”.

Many more netizens came out to share the same dish seen in their households, with @mieza_s saying “Okay, for sale” after spotting a complete set in his cupboard. @Ahyino also joked that, “This Hari Raya, you guys will miss out on eating rendang from this [RM]70,000 bowl”, presumably because he’d be trying to lelong it.

Twitter user @AyzadAzhar went even further than just trying to sell the CorningWare dishes, tweeting, “Is there anything of value in here?” along with a photo of fine Chinaware in his house.

CorningWare dishes lists for high prices on eBay
Malaysians have found creative ways to keep busy during MCO, including redecorating their homes and making mini prayer mats for their cats during Ramadan. And now there’s another new activity for many: raiding their household pantry for dishes to try and sell off on auction sites such as eBay.
While it doesn’t do any harm to see how much these cookware will go for online, there’s also a flurry of competition on the market for these CorningWare dishes, so we don’t expect them to sell off soon.
