Instead, we use <\/span><b>different titles to address people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on their age and gender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, there are probably dozens of titles, and they can vary depending on which region you\u2019re in, so we\u2019re not going to go too deep into it. But here are the most basic ones that you should know to avoid awkward encounters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When speaking with a man slightly older than yourself \u2013 like, by one to a few years \u2013 call him \u201canh\u201d. The word literally translates to \u201colder brother\u201d. The female equivalent is \u201cch\u1ecb\u201d, meaning \u201colder sister\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vice versa, address someone slightly younger than you as \u201cem\u201d \u2013 the word applies to both genders \u2013 and they\u2019ll call you anh or ch\u1ecb instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people around your parents\u2019 age, use the titles \u201cch\u00fa\u201d when speaking to a man, and \u201cc\u00f4\u201d for a woman. Mistakes are expected from foreigners, and most likely nobody will judge you even if you got things wrong. At the end of the day, it\u2019s a personal choice. Just know that in Vietnam, smoking is considered more of a \u201cmen\u2019s thing\u201d, and a <\/span><b>woman smoking can be frowned upon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by some people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get us wrong, it\u2019s perfectly fine for a woman to smoke in a bar, a club, or other more laidback environments \u2013 provided she\u2019s not in a no-smoking zone, of course. However, if you\u2019re, say, invited to meet a friend\u2019s family, remember that some, especially older people, are not going to take it kindly to the sight of you smoking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On that topic, even for men, it\u2019s best to avoid smoking in someone else\u2019s house unless you know your host also smokes. To be extra safe, ask for permission first before you light your cigarette, and don\u2019t smoke near the elderly and children.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Dining etiquette in Vietnam<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having friends over for a meal is our way of showing them our goodwill, and if you\u2019re invited to a Vietnamese meal, remember these etiquette tips so as not to embarrass yourself and make your host uncomfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you don\u2019t need to try too hard to be courteous to the point where it makes you feel stressed.\u00a0 As mentioned, foreigners are given a lot of leeways &#8211; we Vietnamese are friendly people, and what\u2019s important to us is that our guests enjoy themselves. If you are invited to a Vietnamese meal, it\u2019s important that you wait for the elders to take their seats first before sitting down yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, when everyone has been seated and had their utensils in front of them, we perform a cozy little ritual called <\/span><b>\u201cm\u1eddi\u201d (invite) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before digging in. The process is simple, you say \u201cM\u1eddi\u201d plus a person\u2019s title, starting with the oldest person present and work your way down. Visit any major tourist destination, and there will be at least a couple of magnificent<a href=\"https:\/\/thesmartlocal.com\/vietnam\/vietnam-pagodas\/\"> temples and pagodas<\/a> for you to gawk at.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Architectural wonders though they might be, these places are also sacred places of worship, and a certain degree of respect is demanded from visitors. No matter how fascinated you are with the carvings and decorations, <\/span><b>refrain from whipping out your camera and pointing it straight at the altar.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prayers are not going to be pleased if they see you do so, and some especially pious people might even consider it blasphemy. If you really want to take a picture of the altar, maybe for academic purposes, do it from a side angle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not that you\u2019ll want for photo opportunities if you avoid snapping the altar either. However, keep it in mind, and before you enter the main altar, look around to see if there are signs asking you to take off your shoes first.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Vietnam etiquette you should know<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is true that all the Vietnamese etiquette and customs can appear overwhelming at first to someone not born into them.
