Indochine – a captivating depiction of historical Vietnam\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From <\/span>Downton Abbey<\/span><\/em> to <\/span>The Crown<\/span><\/em>, European period drama films have been captivating contemporary audiences all over the world these days. It’s hard to get over fairytale gowns, distinctive etiquette, flowery speech, and stunning architecture that belong in ancient times.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you already know how to dine in the Queen’s presence after watching many historical dramas, we suggest you shift your attention to a movie set in another region in the same period – Indochina from 1887 to 1954.<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s probably no material that can depict Indochina and its short period of French rule in a more riveting, gripping, and romantic fashion than the movie <\/span>Indochine<\/b><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s what makes the movie worth a watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. The movie is set in Vietnam during the 1930s-1950s<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Directed by <\/span>R\u00e9gis Wargnier<\/span>, <\/span><\/i>Indochine<\/span><\/em> is a 1992 movie set in Vietnam during the 1930s to 1950s, when the country was a colony of France and the Nguy\u1ec5n Dynasty monarchy was still reigning. <\/span>The trailer of Indochine<\/em><\/span><\/a> opens with a very impressive line that summaries the setting of the movie.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Before there was the nation of Vietnam, there was a land called Indochine.” the line reads.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a movie buff, I find this introduction enchanting, if read in context. As a history buff, I would add one more line to offer a more precise historic view.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore there was Indochine, there was \u0110\u1ea1i Nam, and before it – Vietnam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout Vietnam’s history, numerous names, officially and unofficially, have been given to the territory of Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indochina<\/b>, or <\/span>Indochine<\/b> in French, refers to a grouping of French colonial territories in Southeast Asia, Vietnam included, from 1887 until 1954. Before the French colonists came in and called this area Indochina, the territory of Vietnam was named \u0110\u1ea1i Nam since 1839. Before that, from 1804-1839, the territory\u2019s official name was Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can see Indochina as the past life of Vietnam, and if you go further back in history, Vietnam was also the past life of Indochina.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since we are talking about names, I’d also like to mention in passing some historical exonyms that were mainly used during the French colonial rule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the Geneva Conference in 1954 that divided the country, southern parts of Vietnam, with Saigon as the principal city, were collectively known as Cochinchina. The northern section was called Tonkin. Central Vietnam, which was also a French protectorate, was commonly referred to as Annam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. It\u2019s about a convoluted love story amid political unrest<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The movie plotline revolves around a convoluted love story between <\/span>Camille<\/b> – a Vietnamese orphan whose father was a deceased Nguy\u1ec5n Dynasty prince, <\/span>\u00c9liane<\/b> –<\/span> her wealthy, doting French foster mother, and <\/span>Jean-Baptiste<\/b> – a handsome French naval officer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Growing up in colonial high society with a prestigious French upbringing, Camille struggles to find her Vietnamese identity as she faces discrimination from her French friends. Worse, she falls in love with a French officer who loves her French foster mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The later part of the movie follows Camille on her life-changing journey that opens her eyes to the outside world and the sufferings of her own people, and fortifies her sense of belonging as a Vietnamese. She reunited with Jean-Baptiste while in northern Vietnam and they had a son together.<\/span><\/p>\n

The transformation of Camille from a carefully sheltered, confused princess who can\u2019t embrace her ethnic identity, into a fearless, affirmative woman who joins anticolonial rebellions after seeing how her people were treated – is breathtaking.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, \u00c9liane realizes that Indochina is dying as the French colonial rule is coming to an end. Knowing that her French citizenship can no longer protect her, the fearless and stubborn plantation owner leaves for France with Camille\u2019s baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indochine<\/span><\/em> also delves into the political unrest in Vietnam at the time, with nationalist movements across the country as French colonialism was coming to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, it is laced with conflicting situations created by the extravagant lifestyles of a group of the colonial gentry versus the extreme suffering of the local people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that <\/span>je ne sais quoi <\/span><\/em>about French women that Emily said in the Netflix hit <\/span>Emily in Paris<\/span><\/i>?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe it lies in French fashion, which is mysteriously classy and seductive at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this movie, you can feast your eyes on spectacular dresses that were a hallmark of French fashion in the 1950s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From slinky, low-back satin dresses perfect for family parties to high-waisted leg pants fitting for working days in the plantations, you\u2019ll wonder how \u00c9liane can pull off so many looks so effortlessly and flawlessly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Vietnamese viewers longing for a peek of old-school local fashion, you\u2019ll also get what you want.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since this is a movie about Vietnam and set in Vietnam, it would not be complete without showcasing traditional Vietnamese fashion – <\/span>\u00e1o d\u00e0i<\/span><\/em>.

\nWhat I love about this movie is how accurately and aesthetically the traditional <\/span>\u00e1o d\u00e0i<\/span><\/em> are portrayed here. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are various forms and styles of <\/span>\u00e1o d\u00e0i<\/span><\/em>, and the ones that you\u2019ll see here are those that you can see in the imperial museums in Hu\u1ebf – and worn by the royal ladies and gentlemen. The forms of the clothing are straight-cut with 5 flaps, the tunics are loose and knee-length, and the patterns are various and colorful.<\/span><\/p>\n

My most favorite part is when <\/span>\u00c9liane<\/span> walks into the Forbidden City in Hu\u1ebf<\/a> and a court lady closes her doors after taking a quick glance at the foreign woman. The scene lasts for several seconds only, but it gives the audience a nostalgic glimpse into how a true-blue palatial woman looked, with black teeth and tiny hair buns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fashion, makeup, and manners of the people living in Vietnam\u2019s last imperial dynasty are beautifully delivered here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Camille navigates strange waters and colonial officers go on a hunt for her, the audience catches sight of Vietnam\u2019s diverse scenery and numerous tourist attractions that are interspersed between the scenes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the Forbidden City in Hu\u1ebf to the Th\u1ea7y Pagoda in Hanoi to Ha Long Bay in Qu\u1ea3ng Ninh, many shots in<\/span> Indochine<\/span><\/em> form a cinematic guide to Vietnam\u2019s geography and cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the movie, you\u2019ll learn how the French-influenced upper-class in Cochinchina carried themselves, how the royal family members did matchmaking, and how the more reserved and Buddhist-influenced people in Tonkin preserved their cultural heritage through the arts and vernacular fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indochine<\/span><\/em> was not the only movie about Vietnam. There have been numerous movies and theatrical works by foreign productions using the Vietnam War as the topic, but the protagonists tend to be non-Vietnamese actresses with Asian looks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indochine<\/em>, fortunately, found <\/span>Linh Dan Pham<\/b>, a Vietnamese actress to play Camille – a Vietnamese girl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Linh Dan Pham was born in 1974 in Saigon and emigrated to France when she was 1 year old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to movie critics, Linh Dan Pham has the look that radiates both innocence and determination befitting a royal Vietnamese lady.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the success of <\/span>Indochine<\/span><\/em>, Linh Dan Pham got a C\u00e9sar Awards nomination for most promising actress.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cinematically fascinating and historically compelling, Indochine<\/em> is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Glamorous, nuanced, and short-lived, Indochina is the historical source and inspiration for much of southern Vietnam’s architecture and fashion even until today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The visuals and acting of <\/span>Indochine<\/span><\/em> has successfully captured everyone’s imagination of an epoch that has sunk into oblivion. Even though the movie was not created or written by a Vietnamese person, it still abounds with stories and qualities that make us Vietnamese proud.<\/span>

\n<\/span>The most striking of them is patriotism – a sense of belonging deep-rooted in our hearts – which can manifest at full strength when the occasion calls for it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
