The capital of B\u00ecnh Thu\u1eadn, a province on the southeast coast of Vietnam, Phan Thi\u1ebft City is believed to be the birthplace of fish sauce and the largest exporting hub of this national treasure. For a very long time, Phan Thi\u1ebft<\/span> has been synonymous with Vietnamese fish sauce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, Dr Tr\u1ea7n decided to build a fish sauce museum here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Opened in 2018, L\u00e0ng Ch\u00e0i X\u01b0a is Vietnam\u2019s first fish sauce museum. It\u2019s built with contemporary architecture, measuring 2,000 square meters, and steeped in warm light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPrior to 1693, Phan Thi\u1ebft, formerly Mang Thit, was a part of the Champa Kingdom and had yet to be occupied by Vietnamese people.<\/span>

It was the Cham people who learned to ferment fish and make sauce from it from Roman traders.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Vietnamese people came to the area, they commercialized fish sauce by storing it in ceramic barrels and selling it across the country. The man who kickstarted and popularized this business activity was Tr\u1ea7n Gia H\u00f2a<\/strong>, born in 1872 and later known as the Lord of Fish Sauce<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of his accomplishment in popularizing fish sauce, he was awarded and made a court mandarin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His initiative also paved the way for the expansion of the local fish sauce manufacturing business and created work for many villagers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

No trip to Phan Thi\u1ebft is complete without a taste of the freshest and finest fish sauce. At the museum, you\u2019ll have the chance to sample m\u1eafm T\u0129n<\/strong> – a traditional fish sauce made from the 300-year-old recipe authored by the Lord of Fish Sauce himself. Tasting original fish sauce before it ever goes into a bottle is an experience that not many people get to have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors can also learn the ancient and very local way of discerning the quality of fish sauce by using rice. According to this method, you drop a grain of rice into a bowl of fish sauce. If it floats, it means that the sauce is rich in protein and authentic. If it sinks to the bottom of the bowl, it means that the fish protein level is not as high.<\/span><\/p>\n

To bring home the flavors of Phan Thi\u1ebft, you can even buy gourmet products such as anchovy fish sauce made from the recipes of Tr\u1ea7n Gia H\u00f2a.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from fish sauce, the museum is also home to numerous historical artifacts that date back to three centuries ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Admirers of the Cham people\u2019s history will be thrilled to find a Kut statue, a funerary art in the lost kingdom\u2019s culture, that dates back to the 15th century. According to the old Champa customs, a person belonging to the highest echelon of a society such as an emperor or a mandarin would have their spirit transferred into a Kut statue after their death.<\/span><\/p>\n

Award tablets given to local fishermen by the Nguy\u1ec5n-dynasty emperors that date back to the 1800s are also on display.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first tablet was given by Emperor \u0110\u1ed3ng Kh\u00e1nh to the residents of H\u00f2a An who came here all the way from Tonkin to build a fishing village and start a new life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second award was from Emperor Kh\u1ea3i \u0110\u1ecbnh to commemorate the heroic deeds of The Lord of South Sea, a local whale that saved the lives of many drowning fishermen.<\/span><\/p>\n
