Drug dealer challenged judge\u2019s understanding of drugs in court<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Fans of English-language dramas have probably watched Suits<\/em>, a hit TV series featuring lawyers from a New York law firm. Packed with new-age philosophies and dramatic arguments, the drama’s storyline involves a team of <\/span>skilled lawyers who can impress juries with their bold choice of words.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, sassiness in the courtroom is certainly not exclusive to dashing lawyers like Harvey Specter. In a criminal trial that took place in Ngh\u1ec7 An on 12th April, a plaintiff involved in a drug dealing<\/a> case, told the judge, “Your Honor doesn\u2019t use drugs, so you don\u2019t understand.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The context? He was trying to convince the judge that he was under the influence of drugs during the alleged crime. We take you through the play-by-play of how the dramatic scene played out IRL.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 12th April, Nguy\u1ec5n C\u1ea3nh Vinh, Phan V\u0103n Phi\u00ean, <\/strong>and Tr\u1ea7n Kh\u1eafc B\u1ea3y<\/strong> were put on trial for drug dealing, drug trafficking, and possession of drugs. <\/span>The indictment alleged that Vinh was responsible for transporting the drugs, while Phi\u00ean and B\u1ea3y would take charge of selling them for VND200,000,000 (~USD8,715)<\/strong> per kilogram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 25th and 26th February, Vinh delivered 1.4KG of heroin and 3KG of drugs to B\u1ea3y in Ngh\u1ec7 An and the two went around having fun for 2 days. After that, B\u1ea3y left for \u0110\u1eafk N\u00f4ng to ship the goods to Phi\u00ean.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his journey as a shipper, he was arrested by local policemen while riding a cab. <\/span>After B\u1ea3y’s arrest, his other two partners were also quick to join him in prison and later in court.<\/span><\/p>\n

At court, B\u1ea3y pleaded guilty while Phi\u00ean and Vinh denied the charges. <\/span>Vinh denied knowing B\u1ea3y and claimed that he was unaware that B\u1ea3y was carrying drugs while they were driving together.\u00a0<\/span>The judge then asked Vinh why he and B\u1ea3y still hung out for 2 days if they didn\u2019t know each other. <\/span><\/p>\n

In response, Vinh said that he was under the influence of drugs at the time and not of sound mind when he was driving B\u1ea3y around. Besides, Vinh claimed that he only hung out with B\u1ea3y because he had promised his other friend to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat means you did use drugs and had hallucinations?\u201d the judge questioned Vinh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of giving the judge a simple \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d answer, Vinh challenged the judge directly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYour Honor doesn\u2019t use drugs, so you don\u2019t understand. Once you snort heroin, you just get carried away very easily. It would give you strong urges to fulfill your promises and help people out at all costs. In my case, I promised Phi\u00ean that I\u2019d hang out with B\u1ea3y and I had to honor my promise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, Vinh’s passionate plea and understanding of drugs couldn’t save him. He and Phi\u00ean received capital punishments, and B\u1ea3y was sentenced to life imprisonment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are plenty of reasons why people get involved in drugs. Whatever these reasons are, the consequences that drug users and dealers face when they get brought to justice remain the same. Drug abuse may result in severe consequences for a few moments of pleasure – for instance, imprisonment or a death sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vinh’s confidence to challenge the judge on the stand aside, it probably wasn’t appropriate to pass judgment on the judge in return. Although the judge might lack experience in actual drug use, he knows its consequences well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hopefully, this case also teaches us that rationalising our crimes at the point of being charged in court, isn’t going to do us any favors. As the famous saying goes, \u201cIf you can\u2019t do the time, don\u2019t do the crime.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
