From suggestions that male students wear <\/span>ao dai<\/a><\/em><\/strong> every Monday to the recent <\/span>#Vi\u1ec7tPh\u1ee5cMu\u00f4nN\u0103m challenge<\/b><\/a>,<\/b> the revival of the <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/i>-wearing movement among Vietnamese men is quickly snowballing into a<\/span> nationwide fashion statement.<\/p>\n

To bring netizens a clearer picture on the practicality of wearing <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em> in their daily lives, two groups of male students in Saigon and Hanoi have proudly worn the traditional Vietnamese garment to school.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u1ef6 V\u00c2N HI\u00caN \u501a\u96f2\u8ed2<\/span><\/a>, a Facebook page that promotes Vietnamese cultural heritage and <\/span>ao dai <\/span><\/em>tailors, had a post that went viral on 18th November. In it was a series of photos showing a group of male students from <\/span>Phan Dinh Phung High School<\/b> in Hanoi clad in <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The ao dai<\/em> worn by these students had looser shapes, and looked cool and comfortable. Waist-high flaps made for easy access to trouser pockets, and completing the traditional get-up with sports shoes gave the entire look a modern and sporty feel.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The photos struck a chord with many netizens who are students because they were taken in a school setting, instead of a photo studio. All of these students were captured wearing backpacks or holding books and laptops, looking like normal students, albeit with extra cool vibes.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Obviously, the message that these students were trying to send in these photos is that male students can look and feel comfortable in <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em>, and turn a few heads in the process too.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Students wearing ao dai<\/em> were also spotted in Saigon<\/b>, Vietnam\u2019s largest fashion mecca and home to the dynamic transformation of ao dai<\/em> throughout the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.<\/p>\n

Looking straight out of a manga page, these students opted for black-and-white ensembles, which are the traditionally popular colours for the get-up.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just these 2 groups of students who were going around in traditional clothes.

Yet another group of male students in Saigon were seen wearing ao dai<\/em> on the streets as if they were stylish streetwear.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

These stylish students even took photos in front of the storefronts of global fashion brands such as Zara <\/b>and Mango,<\/b> as if to emphasise the fashion trend of Vietnamese ao dai<\/em> that has been sweeping across the nation recently.<\/p>\n

Netizens are in awe<\/strong><\/h3>\n
\n

Since <\/span>Vietnamese men wearing<\/span> ao dai<\/span><\/em><\/a> in everyday situations is not a common sight, seeing these students doing so is a<\/span> delightful surprise<\/b> to many netizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facebook user Nguy\u1ec5n Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng<\/a> expressed her admiration for the ao dai<\/em>-clad boys in her comment, \u201cIf I buy ao dai<\/em> from your store, will I get these models as a promotion<\/b>? If it\u2019s a yes, I\u2019ll buy all of your ao dai<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Facebook user <\/span>Phuong Anh Nguyen<\/span><\/a> commented, \u201cI want to go back to school so that I can see male students wearing<\/span> ao dai<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0110\u00e0o Lan<\/span>,<\/span><\/a> however, <\/span>pointed out the practical difference in <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em> for men and women, and compared the men\u2019s version to Western-style shirts, saying, \u201c<\/span>Ao dai<\/span><\/em> for men looks more comfortable than <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em> for women. Its <\/span>loose fit <\/b>helps men to<\/span> hide their belly fat<\/b>, which makes the garment more useful than shirts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from praises and encouragement, there are also comments which questioned the inconvenience of wearing <\/span>ao dai<\/em> <\/span>to school, even as the students in the photos looked comfortable wearing them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Wearing <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em>] is beautiful. The main concern here is whether our students feel inconvenienced wearing <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em> when going about their school activities. Besides, we need to factor in the inconvenience <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em> has on female students instead of focusing on just male students,\u201d commented Facebook user <\/span>Camvan Nguyen<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s heartening to note that <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em> is enjoying such fervent <\/span>renewed interest <\/b>among young Vietnamese people. While many Vietnamese men think that the <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/em>-wearing tradition<\/span><\/a> in everyday life shouldn\u2019t be revived, there are people who are making the effort to give the traditional garment <\/span>a new lease of life. <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
