Traditional Vietnamese-style wedding in Angola<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On September 1st<\/strong>, photos shared on Youtuber <\/span>Pham Quang Linh\u2019s Facebook page<\/span> capturing Vietnamese men clad in white shirts and red ties while carrying trays of colorful goodies went viral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While this is a common sight in every Vietnamese traditional wedding<\/a>, it is a strange scene to behold in<\/span> Angola<\/b> – a country in Africa, where the Vietnamese community is relatively small.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Uniquely, this Vietnamese-style wedding was not organized for a Vietnamese couple, but <\/span>a local Angolan couple.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The wedding photos posted on <\/span>Pham Quang Linh\u2019s Facebook page<\/a><\/span> were taken from his <\/span>video<\/span><\/a>, then shared widely and becoming a hit with the Vietnamese Facebook community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pham Quang Linh, who took the photos, is a <\/span>Vietnamese citizen living in Angola<\/b>. According to Linh, this wedding was organized for Lindo, a 24-year-old Angloan who is also his close friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lindo and Cilia<\/b>, his wife, are not well off and could hardly afford to have a big wedding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c2 months before Lindo\u2019s wedding, I came up with the idea of incorporating Vietnamese wedding traditions into an African wedding. I wanted to<\/span> introduce Vietnamese culture to the locals<\/b>. Fortunately, the groom and bride\u2019s families were on board with the idea,\u201d Linh said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following Vietnamese traditions, the engagement party was hosted at the bride\u2019s home while the wedding ceremony took place at the groom\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goodie trays <\/b>filled with sweets and beverages, which are usually presented by the groom\u2019s family for the bride\u2019s as a <\/span>token of appreciation<\/b> at the beginning of the engagement ceremony, were also prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditionally<\/b>, as the groom\u2019s family arrives at the bride\u2019s house, a group of 6 to 8 groomsmen will gather at the bride\u2019s door and stand in a line with the goodie-laden trays on their shoulders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bride also sends out her group of <\/span>bridesmaids<\/b> clad in red or pink <\/span>ao dai<\/span><\/i> to the door to <\/span>receive the trays.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>exchange of goodie trays<\/b> between both sides of the families represent the bride\u2019s family\u2019s acceptance of the groom’s family\u2019s official proposal. It\u2019s like proposing all over again, but this time to the bride\u2019s family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, the bride\u2019s and groom\u2019s families will discuss the arrangements and activities of their bridesmaids and groomsmen in advance, so everything is actually agreed upon ahead of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To carry out this tradition, Linh had to ask his Vietnamese friends to chip in as groomsmen and the bride\u2019s Angolan friends as bridesmaids. And that\u2019s how the unprecedented scene of <\/span>Vietnamese groomsmen handing trays to Angolan bridesmaids<\/b> was captured and went viral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI sponsored all of the wedding expenses. I also asked my Vietnamese friends to lend a hand. This unprecedented wedding was a big surprise to the locals and we had a large crowd coming to the wedding. That made me very happy,\u201d Linh shared.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/a>At the couple\u2019s wedding party, Linh and his Vietnamese friends also brought in traditional Vietnamese elements by creating a wedding arch with<\/span> pineapple leaves.<\/b><\/p>\n

Pham Quang Linh<\/b>, a 23-year-old man from Vietnam, is one of very few Asian YouTubers who live in Africa and actively shares videos about his life here.<\/p>\n

Besides operating his own refrigerator business, Linh is actively involved in charity work to provide relief efforts to poor children in Africa. <\/span><\/p>\n

He usually uses his own money to buy basic necessities, as well as to raise funds from local Vietnamese communities to help the poor here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the years, Vietnam has seen millions of its people moving to other countries to study, work, or put down roots. Whatever their purposes are, their hearts will always be with their homeland and drive them to keep Vietnamese culture alive wherever they may be.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pham Quang Linh is setting a great example for Vietnamese overseas<\/a> about <\/span>compassion and patriotism. <\/b>Not only is he a faithful friend and responsible expat who unfailingly finds ways to help his local friends, but he\u2019s also a patriotic Vietnamese man who does his best to share Vietnamese culture where he lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
