COVID-19 in Vietnam, update on 4th August 2020<\/h2>\n

Since our last update<\/a> yesterday, Vietnam has reported 31 additional COVID-19 cases<\/strong> caused by community transmission. All of the new cases are associated with the central city of \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng, which was heavily hit by the second wave of infections and is currently under lockdown. At the moment, Vietnam\u2019s total COVID-19 patient count is sitting at 652.<\/p>\n

Two more fatalities have also been reported in the morning, which bring the total COVID-19-related death tally<\/strong> to 8.<\/p>\n

Authorities across Vietnam are implementing measures to contain the spread of the disease<\/a>. Many activities that can attract crowds have been suspended. Meanwhile, \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng is preparing 2 flights to send stranded tourists home.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Health announced 21 new COVID-19 cases yesterday evening<\/strong> and 10 more early this morning<\/strong>, making for a jump of 31 cases in Vietnam\u2019s total COVID-19 patient count since our last update yesterday.<\/p>\n

All of the new cases, including 22 \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng residents and 9 people from<\/strong> the nearby province of Qu\u1ea3ng Nam<\/strong>, are associated with the \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng Hospital<\/a> \u2013 a major COVID-19 cluster in the city. These include the hospital\u2019s staff, patients, patients\u2019 relatives who visit, and those who\u2019ve had contact with them.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, two fatalities were reported this morning. These are Patient 426<\/strong>, a 62-year-old woman, and Patient 496<\/strong>, a 65-year-old man. They were both from \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng and both had a medical background of chronic kidney disease.<\/p>\n

So far, Vietnam has recorded 652 total COVID-19 cases<\/strong> since the beginning of the pandemic, among whom there have been 374 recoveries<\/strong> and 8\u00a0fatalities<\/strong>. The remaining 270 patients are still in treatment.<\/p>\n

Hanoi to suspend activities at pedestrian street<\/h3>\n

Hanoi’s pedestrian street<\/a> is a popular gathering spot for residents every weekend, when vehicles are barred from entering the area around the iconic Ho\u00e0n Ki\u1ebfm Lake to make room for music performances, traditional games, and other entertainment activities. However, in light of the new threat of the second COVID-19 wave, the city\u2019s Steering Committee on COVID-19 prevention has ordered all activities that can attract crowds around the pedestrian streets to shut down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to a report from the Committee, as of 1st August, Hanoi has conducted tests on nearly 50,000 citizens<\/strong> who have been to \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng recently. None were found positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Hu\u1ebf Festival postponed until next year<\/h3>\n

The Hu\u1ebf Festival<\/a> is a major cultural event held biannually in the central city of Hu\u1ebf – formerly the capital of the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam. Aimed to celebrate Vietnam\u2019s traditional values, the festival is home to a plethora of activities from \u00e1o d\u00e0i <\/em>fashion shows to music performances.<\/p>\n

Normally, the festival would be held in late April \u2013 early May<\/strong>, but this year, it was originally<\/strong> rescheduled to late August<\/strong> due to impacts of COVID-19.<\/p>\n

With new developments regarding the virus, however, the People\u2019s Committee of Hu\u1ebf City has announced that the festival will once again be postponed until next year<\/strong>. The exact date is yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

High school graduation exam to be carried out as normal<\/h3>\n

The resurgence of the novel coronavirus has also left many 12th grade students worried as to whether they\u2019ll still be able to take their high school graduation exams.<\/p>\n

According to the latest update from Vietnam\u2019s Government Portal<\/a>, the national high school graduation exam will still be carried out<\/strong> as planned on the 8th to the 10th of August. Safety measures will be in place at exam points to protect students, teachers, and parents.<\/p>\n

Students living in areas that are enforcing strict social distancing policies, as well as students who have contracted COVID-19 or have had close contact with COVID-19 patients, will take the exam on a later date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In related reports, many universities in Hanoi and H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City are switching to online teaching<\/strong> to avoid gatherings of large groups.<\/p>\n

As we reported yesterday, there are still 400 domestic tourists stranded in \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng City, most of whom are from Hanoi and H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City. Upon being granted approval by Prime Minister Nguy\u1ec5n Xu\u00e2n Ph\u00fac, \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng\u2019s authorities announced that they are planning 2 flights to Hanoi and H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City to send these tourists home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Passengers will pay for their own tickets<\/strong> to the flights and are also required to provide proof<\/strong> that they are indeed stranded tourists in need of support, including:<\/p>\n
