COVID-19 in Vietnam, update on 3rd August<\/h2>\n

Since our last update on Thursday<\/a>, Vietnam has witnessed a massive spike of 162 new COVID-19 cases. According to the latest numbers announced by the Ministry of Health early this morning, the total patient tally in the country is currently sitting at 621<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Vietnam also officially confirmed its first COVID-19-related death on Friday evening<\/strong>. Since then, 5 others have been reported, putting the fatality count so far at 6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Friday morning alone, the country reported 45<\/strong> new cases, and 38<\/strong> others were announced on the evening of the same day. This makes for the biggest jump in Vietnam’s COVID-19 patient count since the beginning of the pandemic. Saturday and Sunday also witnessed major spurts of 40<\/strong> and 34<\/strong> new cases respectively.<\/p>\n

This morning, only 1 case was reported<\/strong>: a 60-year-old woman from the central province of Qu\u1ea3ng Ng\u00e3i. She was at the \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng Hospital between 18th and 22nd July to take care of a sick relative.<\/p>\n

31 of the 162 new patients<\/strong> are Vietnamese citizens returning from other countries who were quarantined on arrival. The rest<\/strong> are caused by domestic community transmission.<\/p>\n

The patients who contracted the disease in the community are from several cities and provinces, including H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i, H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City, Qu\u1ea3ng Ng\u00e3i, \u0110\u1eafk L\u1eafk, and more. However, the source of infection can all be traced back to the central city of \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng<\/strong>, where the first case of this new wave was discovered. The oldest patient is 100 years old<\/strong>, living in Qu\u1ea3ng Nam Province.<\/p>\n

The first COVID-19-related death in Vietnam was confirmed on Friday evening to be a 70-year-old man from H\u1ed9i An City, Qu\u1ea3ng Nam Province<\/strong>. He had several other health issues including chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, and ischemic heart disease.<\/p>\n

5 more deaths have been reported since then, bringing the total fatality tally to 6. All of the deceased are elderly patients with numerous health issues<\/strong>. The latest death, a 53-year-old woman, was announced yesterday evening<\/strong>. She also experienced medical conditions including type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure.<\/p>\n

13 other patients<\/strong> are currently in<\/strong> critical condition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to a report by VNExpress<\/a> this morning, Prime Minister Nguy\u1ec5n Xu\u00e2n Ph\u00fac has agreed to provide vehicles<\/strong> to bring home 400 Vietnamese stranded in \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng<\/strong>, the majority of whom are domestic tourists. They will be put under quarantine after that if such a measure is deemed necessary.<\/p>\n

The conclusion was made during an online meeting yesterday afternoon. Mr. Hu\u1ef3nh \u0110\u1ee9c Th\u01a1, Chairman of the People\u2019s Committee of \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng City, said there were still over 400 people, mostly tourists from Hanoi and H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City, stranded in the city. They are unable to go home as \u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng has entered a citywide social distancing period and suspended all means of public transportation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t determine when the pandemic will be over in [\u0110\u00e0 N\u1eb5ng] yet. If we wait until then to send the tourists home, it\u2019ll interfere a lot with their work, especially since they\u2019ll also have to serve a quarantine period,\u201d Mr. Th\u01a1 said.<\/p>\n
