Vietnamese grandmas combat COVID-19<\/b><\/h2>\n

The media keeps telling us to<\/span> take good care of our elders<\/b> during the COVID-19 pandemic as they are the most vulnerable age group, but in Vietnam, our <\/span>grannies are stepping up to take care of us<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, the story of <\/span>a 95-year-old war widow sewing face masks to distribute for free<\/span><\/a> had us in tears, and now, we once again have to tip our hats to many other elderly ladies contributing to the fight against the pandemic by going out of their way to donate to quarantine facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

A popular story amongst Vietnamese netizens in the past couple of days is that of <\/span>Mdm L\u00ea Th\u1ecb Xu\u00e2n, a 98-year-old woman<\/b> in the central province of Ngh\u1ec7 An who <\/span>personally brought 1KG of rice and 50 eggs to a quarantine facility <\/b>in the area as a gift to its staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m old and I have nothing much, this is but a small gift to the soldiers and those in quarantine to help them in the fight against the pandemic,\u201d Mdm Xu\u00e2n told<\/span> Vietnamnet<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the staff at the facility tried to refuse the gift, saying that they had everything they needed and she should keep the goods for herself, Mdm Xu\u00e2n reportedly said, <\/span>\u201cI\u2019ll get mad if you refuse!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

2 tons of rice, paid for with life savings<\/h3>\n

Earlier, on 31<\/span>st<\/span> March, <\/span>Mdm Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb T\u1eedu<\/b>, a 101-year-old woman from Ngh\u1ec7 T\u0129nh Province, made headlines when she took <\/span>VND28,000,000 (~USD1,200)<\/b> from her savings to buy <\/span>2 tons of rice to donate<\/b> to the military headquarters in the province. The rice was then distributed to soldiers working on the frontline.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said to<\/span> VNExpress<\/span><\/a>, \u201cI thought of multiple options such as donating in cash and buying medical supplies, but ultimately decided that rice was the most appropriate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While<\/span> Mdm Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb Ba<\/b>, 87 years old, didn\u2019t have as much to give as Mdm T\u1eedu, she also touched netizens\u2019 hearts when she <\/span>walked 200M with 5KG of rice and some veggies from her own garden<\/b> to a local quarantine facility to make her contribution<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, 200M might not sound like that great of a distance, but for a woman of her age to walk that far while carrying such a burden, the dedication is enough for us to bow our heads in respect. <\/span>

Many people have taken to Facebook to show their appreciation to these elderly ladies, often referring to them as <\/span>\u201cm\u1eb9\u201d<\/b> \u2013 which translates to<\/span> \u201cmother\u201d in Vietnamese<\/b> \u2013 as a sign of respect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facebook users Th\u00e0nh Ho\u00e0ng commented on Mdm Xu\u00e2n\u2019s story, \u201cMOTHER\u2019s kind heart is so precious and respectable,\u201d capitalizing the word \u201cm\u1eb9\u201d (mother).<\/span><\/p>\n
