1. \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3 – traditional vivid paintings of daily life<\/h3>\n

When coming to B\u1eafc Ninh Province, one of the cultural centers of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam, you can find \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3 paintings<\/strong>, a genre that is well-known across the country. They are named after \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3, the village where they are made.<\/p>\n Originally, they were associated with the T\u1ebft holiday<\/a> in northern Vietnam, but today people usually use them to decorate their houses. As decorative and worship paintings, the recurrent motifs of \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3 paintings include good wishes, daily routines, as well as some sacred deities.<\/p>\n Traditionally, an artisan will carve his drawing on a woodblock and then add on colourful paint. The colored woodblock will then be applied on a special piece of paper named gi\u1ea5y \u0111i\u1ec7p, <\/em>made from scallops and rhamnoneuron bark to produce the painting. The artisans at \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3 today still make paintings with this method.<\/p>\n Where you can find these: <\/strong><\/span>\u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3 Village, Song H\u1ed3 Commune, Thu\u1eadn Th\u00e0nh District, B\u1eafc Ninh Province<\/p>\n H\u00e0ng Tr\u1ed1ng is another genre of traditional painting whose origin was no other than the capital city of Hanoi. In fact, these paintings used to be mass-produced on H\u00e0ng N\u00f3n and H\u00e0ng Tr\u1ed1ng Streets in the Old Quarter<\/a>, Ho\u00e0n Ki\u1ebfm District.<\/p>\n Unlike their counterparts in \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3, H\u00e0ng Tr\u1ed1ng paintings<\/strong> were used for worship, so they often feature powerful deities and sacred animals such as dragons and tigers. You’ll notice H\u00e0ng Tr\u1ed1ng’s vivid colors and patterns. As a decorative genre like \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3, Kim Ho\u00e0ng paintings<\/strong> usually depict daily activities and familiar subjects such as cattle and poultry.<\/p>\n However, what makes Kim Ho\u00e0ng paintings distinctive is their painting technique, and most importantly, the paper. In the past, the artisans would add colors to a woodblock and apply the block, not once but twice, on paper to make a painting. The solid colors look even far more brilliant on h\u1ed3ng \u0111i\u1ec1u<\/em>, a type of paper which is recognizable for its brilliant red hue.<\/p>\n After a devastating flood in 1915, the artisans in V\u00e2n Canh stopped making Kim Ho\u00e0ng paintings. However, more researchers and artists are making great efforts to resurrect this genre. For now, you can admire the Kim Ho\u00e0ng paintings in the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi.<\/p>\n Where you can find these: <\/strong><\/span>Kim Ho\u00e0ng Village, V\u00e2n Canh Commune, Ho\u00e0i \u0110\u1ee9c District, Hanoi, or get them at<\/span> Tranh Kim Ho\u00e0ng.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Coming to Hu\u1ebf, the ancient capital of\u00a0 Vietnam, you can visit L\u1ea1i \u00c2n commune, where L\u00e0ng S\u00ecnh, or S\u00ecnh Village, home to many intriguing worship paintings, is located.<\/p>\n As L\u00e0ng S\u00ecnh paintings<\/strong> are only used for worship, their recurrent themes are the meaningful and powerful animals such as dragons, tigers, or ngh\u00ea<\/em>, a gentle imaginary Vietnamese animal similar to a lion. After the rituals, the paintings are usually burned to ash.<\/p>\n Visiting L\u1ea1i \u00c2n Commune, you’ll find some families who still sustain their traditional painting making business. In order to make an authentic L\u00e0ng S\u00ecnh painting, the artisans should strictly follow 7 steps namely cutting paper, varnishing the paper pieces with scallop mixture, printing the paintings, drying them in the shade, preparing the paints, varnishing, and finally adding the pupils of the characters’ eyes.<\/p>\n Where you can find these: <\/strong><\/span>S\u00ecnh Village, also known as L\u1ea1i \u00c2n Village, Ph\u00fa M\u1eadu Commune, Ph\u00fa Vang District, Th\u1eeba Thi\u00ean-Hu\u1ebf Province<\/p>\n If L\u00e0ng S\u00ecnh paintings are those used by commoners during their worship rituals, the Hu\u1ebf glass paintings<\/strong> are exclusive to the royal family. Therefore, you can find this genre of paintings in a lot of royal palaces in the Citadel and the emperors’ tombs across Hu\u1ebf City.<\/p>\n There are three topics that usually appear in Hu\u1ebf glass paintings: Hu\u1ebf scenery, scenes from\u00a0 Chinese folklore, and still-life. To meet the high standard of the royal family, these paintings required dexterous artisans to perform complicated techniques.<\/p>\n In fact, to make these paintings, the artisans have to paint a mixture of color powder and glue on the back of the transparent glass. As the painting will be reversed on the front side, which is also the exhibited side, the artisans are supposed to be extremely careful and focused. However, through time, these southern glass paintings<\/strong> have gradually become distinctive from the glass paintings in Hu\u1ebf.<\/p>\n The biggest distinctions between the two genres of paintings are their uses and topics. While the Hu\u1ebf glass paintings reflect the natural landscapes of Hu\u1ebf, the southern glass paintings feature gods and deities. This is because the glass paintings are mostly put on the altar in this area. The prices of southern paintings in Vietnam are also much lower, so that any commoners can afford them.<\/p>\n However, their heyday is over. Today, you may find these southern glass paintings in old houses with great altars or in temples and communal houses across the region.<\/p>\n Where you can find these: <\/strong><\/span>B\u00e0 V\u1ec7 Market, Long \u0110i\u1ec1n B Commune, Ch\u1ee3 M\u1edbi District, An Giang Province<\/p>\n Also in the Mekong Delta, you can find fabric wrap paintings<\/strong>, a genre of Vietnamese traditional paintings that is totally different from its counterparts across Vietnam. As the name suggests, what is interesting about this genre is its main material, which is fabric.<\/p>\n In the past, to make this kind of painting, the artisans would come to the customer’s house to sketch a model. Then they would stick cotton on a piece of carton board based on the sketch. The painting would be completed in 1 to 2 months and then delivered to the customer. Then the subjects in these pictures have become diverse from historical figures to natural landscapes.<\/p>\n Some say that fabric wrap paintings were first invented by an artisan named Tr\u1ea7n V\u0103n Huy, alias Th\u1ee7y Ti\u00ean, from Sa \u0110\u00e9c, \u0110\u1ed3ng Th\u00e1p. At the beginning, he used the wrapping technique to create altar paintings for funerals. Impressed with their vividity, especially the 3-D features of the details, more people rushed to him to order and learn how to do it. Gradually, this genre became common all over southern Vietnam.<\/p>\n However, with the prominence of modern painting, the fabric wrap paintings also face the threat of complete disappearance.
