In fact, it included the main altar house with a complex system of wooden pillars and roof beams, and a ceramic tiled roof decorated with Asian dragon figures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In front of the altar house was a huge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stone screen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> celebrating Pigneau de B\u00e9haine\u2019s support towards the Nguy\u1ec5n Dynasty. As described by the scholar Ph\u1ea1m Qu\u1ef3nh, Pigneau de B\u00e9haine\u2019s stone tomb was placed at the altar house. The priests\u2019 remains were returned to the French Embassy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the area where the tomb once stood was then renovated into a roundabout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the tomb is no longer there, the locals still call the roundabout <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u0103ng Cha C\u1ea3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the Great Priest Roundabout. <\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. However, the transformation from this large swamp into a symbolic market gives us an impression of how the city has developed over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For nearly a century after the French had occupied Gia \u0110\u1ecbnh, now known as Saigon, in 1859, the area that would be H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh City was scattered with ponds and swamps. These swamps were so large that they separated Saigon and Cholon into two separate metropolises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marais Boresse, or ao B\u1ed3-r\u1ec7t in Vietnamese, was a giant swamp in the middle of Saigon at the time. This was actually a slum with poor living conditions. However, this project was delayed for years due to a funding shortage. The swamps were filled gradually in the 1900s to build new streets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1911 to 1914, a new market was built in the middle of the filled Marais Boresse area to replace the old market on Boulevard Charner (Nguy\u1ec5n Hu\u1ec7 Street today). The new market was called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ch\u1ee3 M\u1edbi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (literally New Market) or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B\u1ebfn Th\u00e0nh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among these clubs,<\/span><b> \u0110\u00eam M\u00e0u H\u1ed3ng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Vietnamese for The Pink Night, stood out as the most significant one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Geneva Accord divided Vietnam into two parts in 1954, many artists, particularly singers, musicians, and music composers moved southwards. In their new land, they started to form dancing clubs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, due to then-South Vietnam\u2019s President Ng\u00f4 \u0110\u00ecnh Di\u1ec7m\u2019s ban on public dancing activities in the 1960s, these clubs turned into singing venues. That was because<\/span><b> Cholon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to have<\/span><b> its own city hall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, in the 19th century, Saigon and Cholon were two separate metropolises. The City Hall of Cholon was built in 1889, and together with adjacent buildings such as the Inspection Bureau, The Drouet, Maternity and Municipal Hospitals, it was part of the French Quarter in Cholon. The market still opens today by the name of X\u00e3 T\u00e2y Market though the City Hall, or Dinh X\u00e3 T\u00e2y as the locals called it, is no more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the area on the front, a medical training centre was built during the Vietnam War. Compared to Qu\u00e1n Market (also known as T\u00e2n Ki\u1ec3ng Market) of the Vietnamese, this market was bigger, so it was called Ch\u1ee3 L\u1edbn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name Cholon was adapted by the Vietnamese to refer to the Chinatown area, while the locals still used the name \u5824\u5cb8 or Th\u1ea7y Ng\u00f2n. This was an important citadel that helped the Nguy\u1ec5n emperors defend the city for quite a long time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1790, at the site of T\u00e2n Khai Village, which may covers Districts 1 and 3 today, Lord Nguy\u1ec5n \u00c1nh had Olivier de Puymanel, Th\u00e9odore Lebrun, and Pigneau de B\u00e9haine design a citadel to fit the urban plan done by general Tr\u1ea7n V\u0103n H\u1ecdc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because all these designers were Westerners, their design imitated the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Vauban design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with star-shaped walls and fortifications at each point. At the peak of this uprising, L\u00ea V\u0103n Kh\u00f4i occupied the Turtle Citadel.
