Classic Vietnamese children’s novel gets a new adaptation<\/h2>\n

This year, the Vietnamese classic children\u2019s novel set in southern Vietnam – \u0110\u1ea5<\/strong><\/span>t R\u1eebng Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Nam <\/b>(Southern Land and Forests)<\/span> –\u00a0 is being made for the big screen 25 years after it became a classic mini-series<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the next big project to be harnessed by Nguy\u1ec5n Quang D\u0169ng – a Vietnamese director famous for his blockbusters and funky personality. As both the original book and the TV mini-series were popular,<\/span> the announcement of the new adaptation has been met with both anticipation and doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n

A casting call was made for lead roles<\/h3>\n

On 4 January 2022, a casting call video was uploaded on the official Facebook page of the movie. Director Nguyen Quang Dung also revealed more details about the project.<\/p>\n

As quoted on VTC News<\/a>, the production team acquired the rights to adapt the book five years ago. The production was set to kickstart in July 2021 but then was delayed due to the pandemic until now.<\/p>\n

The casting for the three main roles\u00a0 An, C\u00f2, and Xinh, will be conducted at casting sites and through audition videos sent in by 17 January 2022. Once the casting is completed, the chosen actors will go through training to hone their acting skills and enhance their stamina.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also according to <\/span>Nguoi Lao Dong<\/span><\/a>, some key members from previous blockbusters of Nguyen Quang Dung will also join the crew. Nguy\u1ec5n Trinh Hoan (Blood Moon Party, Go-Go Sisters; <\/span>previously the cinematographer of the 1997 TV mini-series<\/span>) is the movie producer while Di\u1ec7p Th\u1ebf Vinh (Go-Go Sisters) serves as the cinematographer. Renowned musician \u0110\u1ee9c Tr\u00ed (D\u1ea1 C\u1ed5 Ho\u00e0i Lang) will compose the score.<\/span><\/p>\n

The movie \u0110\u1ea5t R\u1eebng Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Nam is a living legacy<\/h3>\n

The movie was based on the Vietnamese classic novel of the same name written in 1957 by \u0110o\u00e0n Gi\u1ecfi. Set in post-1945 southern Vietnam, \u0110\u1ea5t R\u1eebng Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Nam tells the story of An – an expelled schoolboy – on a journey to look for his estranged father. On this journey, he met numerous characters from peasants, a snake-catcher, and a crocodile-hunter to theatre performers and a shaman.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0110\u1ea5t R\u1eebng Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Nam is one the best descriptions of pristine nature and <\/span>generous people<\/span> in southern Vietnam in the mid-20th century. In 1997, it was made into an 11-episode TV series titled \u0110\u1ea5t Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Nam<\/strong> (Southern Land, also known as Song of the South). <\/span>Despite financial limitations at the time of filming, the series is still iconic and ages significantly well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many netizens have expressed that, the TV mini-series was so good that it set a high bar for Nguy\u1ec5n Quang D\u0169ng\u2019s new adaptation. However<\/span>, according to the director, the movie version will be <\/span>a more faithful version of the book. Nguy\u1ec5n Vinh S\u01a1n, the director of the TV mini-series, also came back as the movie consultant.<\/span><\/p>\n
