Due to a turn of events at the start of the year, many people had to refund their flights and postpone vacations abroad while staying home. Museums and heritage sites took the opportunity to bring the place to homes through livestreams and virtual tours.

Last month, The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) joined in and posted a list of places around Thailand for visitors to explore despite cancelled plans.

See spectacular landmarks from almost every angle

Netizens can now visit locations scattered around Thailand through the same technology used in Google Street View.

The virtual tours still limit visitors to the landmark but can otherwise fully explore the area as one could on foot. For example, the “Kung Krabaen Bay” in Chanthaburi allows you to climb up and down the stairs for a better view. The bay is a mangrove conservation, with shady nature trails built around the lush forest for quiet walks. It is breathtaking even from a virtual tour.

The tour in response to the steep decline in tourism from lockdowns and travel bans. TAT decided to go sightseeing virtually in order for people to still be able to travel Thailand without waiting or rule-breaking.

You can join the virtual tours on the TAT’s official website, with currently ten locations around nine provinces to visit, from Wat Si Chum in Sukhothai to Wat Phra Mahathat in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Thailand’s lockdown is still in effect until the end of May. If everything goes well, travel bans will be lifted just in time for summer break. But until then, stay home and stay safe!
