We’re glad that the daily number of COVID-19 cases in Thailand have started to drop during the past couple of days. And due to this good sign, the Thai government might ease the curfew regulations by the end of April if the numbers continue to drop.

On 13th April 2020, a meeting to discuss COVID-19 was chaired by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the government’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA). Officials said as there were only 28 new cases (on 13th April 2020), the government might ease the curfew by the end of April to support local businesses which were forced to close amid night time.

However, this is based on the condition that the number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand continues to drop.

Gradual changes to be made at a careful pace

However, on 14th April 2020, the number of infections rose to 34 cases. As a result, Taweesin Visanuyothin, CCSA spokesman, said that Thailand should not perform or declare any measures that would bring about more risks, and the easing of restrictions could raise the number of infection again.

Meanwhile, Dr Amorn Leelarasamee, president of the Medical Association of Thailand, gave supporting ideas on 15th April 2020. Even though he agrees that Thailand should lift some restrictions to help local businesses, everything needs to be done carefully.

Dr Amorn also shared that local shops could reopen if the number of daily infections in Thailand hits single digits, and no more than 10 customers should be allowed to access the shops at one time. Besides local businesses, places which are always crowded with people like bars, restaurants, and other entertainment spots should be the last on the list to be reopened.

Discussions are still taking place with regards to the decision, so, stay tuned for official updates and take care.
