Online porn ban in Thailand causes outrage

The Thai government announced today, 3 November, that it had banned over 190 pornography websites including Pornhub. This sparked outrage, leading to citizens protesting against the ban, CNA reported.

Digital Minister Puttipong Punnakanta shared that the ban was part of an effort to prevent access to websites that promote porn and gambling. He also added that these were illegal under Thailand’s cybercrime laws.

This decision has made waves on Thai social media platforms, with hashtags like #HornyPower (translated from Thai) and memes trending on Twitter. Many also criticised the harshness of the ban, referring to it as “digital dictatorship” that controls what people can do or say online.

Activist groups are also taking action to bring Pornhub back. “People are entitled to choices,” shared group Anonymous Party in a statement.

As recently as 2019, Thailand was in Pornhub’s Top 20 list for incoming daily traffic.
