Thailand opens borders for tourists with special visa
After much discussion and consideration, Thailand’s Ministry of Interior officially announced the Special Tourist Visa (STV) on 1st October 2020 to welcome travellers from low-risk countries with a 14-day quarantine required.
On 20th October 2020, the very first group of tourists, who flew in from Shanghai, arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport and are now under quarantine.

Yesterday, 20th October 2020, 41 travellers from Shanghai arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport in the evening under the Special Tourist Visa (STV).
They were tested for COVID-19 right after arriving and began a compulsory 14-day quarantine period at Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotels approved by the Thai government.
The STV allows visitors to stay and travel in Thailand for 90 days (including the quarantine period) and can be extended to a maximum of 180 days more at ฿2,000 (~USD6.40)/90 days.

After the 2-week quarantine, travellers can enjoy their trip with a COVID-19 tracking application. Beaches are the main destinations for these tourists.
The second group from Guangzhou, China, with around 100 visitors are expected to reach Bangkok on 26th October 2020.

Yuthasak Supasorn, the Governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “If the first group of Chinese tourists is considered to be generally successful, the TAT might propose to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) and the cabinet to increase the number of tourists allowed in the country.”
Many Thai netizens agree that it will help boost up the Thai economy and hope that the government and involved organizations will strengthen the measures and put strict processes to prevent new cases.
