LGBTIQ+ activist dresses as a monk

The LGBTIQ+ community is socially tolerated in Thailand. However, there are still traditional norms that limit them to integrate into society fully, which forced many advocates to come up with different forms of activism to grab more attention.

Bold cultural commentary is one of those ways to steal the spotlight.

On 7th June 2021, an LGBTIQ+ activist advocates for gender inclusivity and dresses as a monk with a rainbow sash – their photo was posted online.

But why choose a monk’s attire? Here’s the story.

The rainbow flag represents gender inclusivity in monkhood. The advocate donned the multicoloured sash whilst sitting in a meditative state with traditionally shaved hair in order to express that everyone should be able to ordain as a monk.

They believe that religious practises are universal and a basic human right.

Monkhood and nunhood in Thailand

The activist believes that religion is restricted in terms of gender.

The main reason behind this advocate’s actions is the traditional belief that only ordained men, who wear orange robes, can reach nirvana. This is the reason behind why Thai parents expect their sons to be ordained as monks.

This practice is different from nunhood in Thailand, where women are covered in white robes. Nuns also cannot achieve nirvana, nor can they expect the same support as monks from temples.

Thus, society disapproves of gender inclusion in monkhood. One’s reproductive organs don’t dictate their gender according to the advocate’s assertion, reported Kapook.
