Cheap food at Siam Square

Siam is located in central Bangkok and equipped with everything from a luxury shopping mall, to night markets and even some of Thailand’s most famous restaurants. With the city centre location laden with landmarks and hotels, it’s quite hard to find some pocket-friendly food to eat here.

Connected to Siam Square Soi 6-8 is a lesser-known food court, Food + Plus, that offers over 30 Thai food stalls with dishes starting at ฿40 (~USD1.30)

Different Thai food with the price starting at ฿35

This affordable eatery is actually the place where office staff and people working around enjoy their lunch. There are various foods ranging from savoury dishes, desserts, and drinks.

Let’s discover what are the items you can expect here.

A main dish with rice for less than $2

Most of the stores here sell Thai style rice and curry, and have tons of choices to choose from. We spot one outlet with the biggest number of items named Khao Keang Su 1,000 or read from the sign ข้าวแกง สุ ๑,๐๐๐

Rice and one main dish costs ฿35 (~USD1.14), and a set with two main dishes costs ฿40 (~USD2.30); you can also add toppings like deep-fried Chinese sausage or deep-fried pork starting from ฿10 (~USD0.33).

We tried the Stir-fried Sweet Pork and Steamed Egg that cost ฿40 (~USD2.30) and found that the portion was generous and the taste amazing. The fatty pork offers an umami flavour that paired perfectly with the sweet sauce and fluffy chive-rich steamed eggs.

This can be a perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t want to challenge themselves with a spiciness. Aside from this non-spicy dish, there are other items that you can customise like pork basil, green curry, Thai spicy salad, and many more.

Khao Kha Moo or Stewed Pork With Rice

Kha Moo is a Thai word for pork legs, which is the main ingredient of this dish. The chewy pork meat with jiggling pork skin is stewed for hours in soybean sauce before being placed on a bed of steaming jasmine rice.

The soup is salty but not overpowering. The restaurant also provides a side of crunchy kale so patrons can take a break from the fatty and soft textures.

Pad Thai

One of the most popular Thai dishes, Pad Thai for ฿40 (~USD2.30) is also worth a try at Food + Plus. We are surprised with a big portion of noodles and toppings.

The dish is served with lime, beansprouts and Chinese chives that help decrease a greasy feeling.

Tom Yum Kung

At Food + Plus, you can have an authentic tom yum kung which directly translates to ‘variety soup with shrimps’ for only ฿100 (~USD3.27). The dish comes in a clear soup that is rich in shrimp fat pasted taste and scent.

You can expect the authentic mix of flavours – like spicy and sour – of herbs like lemongrass, galangal, and also dried chili.

You will get over 8-9 shrimps which are fresh and firm. Aside from that, there are mushrooms that add more chewy texture to the dish too.

Healthy smoothies with fresh fruit from Thailand

Other than these suggested dishes, there is plenty of food not only savoury but also desserts. We finished our meal in a healthier way:with a Mixed Vegetable And Fruit Smoothie for ฿60 (~USD1.96) which is quite affordable compared to other shops that charge at least ฿150 (~USD4.90).

There are tons of fruits and vegetables mixed together like apple, pineapple, oranges, celery, beetroot, and others. The drink is not too sweet and is full of fibres – you’ll definitely feel like one of those fitness and health influencers drinking these all-natural fruit smoothies.

How to get there

If you do end up shopping in Siam and don’t want to spend too much money on eating out, Food + Plus can be your perfect choice. The food court not only offers you a pocket-friendly price but also a chance to try the real local dishes with authentic Thai tastes.

After getting down from Exit 4 of Siam BTS, turn towards Siam Square One, walk to the left, and keep your eyes up for a sign reading “Food + Plus”. Under the sign, you will find a narrow alley packed with food stores on one side, and another side are high chairs and tables.
